I've got a few projects on the go that require a lot of gold, the Citadel gold spray is great but obscenely expensive, does anybody have any alternative recommendations?

I tried the Wilko's gold spray paint, it wasn't very good; I guess you get what you pay for!

Try the army painter gold spray. Excellent pigmentation, smooth coverage and much cheaper than GW sprays.
