So I'm trying to make my first list ever (I have never played 40k before so I really am just shooting at the dark) and I was wondering about the points values associated with weapons?

If a unit has certain weapons, like a Tyranid Gargoyle has by default a Fleshborer and that cannot be changed according to the codex. Do I have to factor in the points for the weapon in addition to the points for the model? And does this hold true for every instance this would happen, like a Swarmlord that with his tail, Do I need to factor that 1 extra point for the weapon into the cost or is that included in his models point cost?

Sorry if this is vague or confusing. The whole process is very foreign to me and it seems really clunky.

... add together the points costs of all your models and the wargear they are armed with to determine your army’s total points value.
- Points Values, assorted Codex's and Index's

Keep in mind that the Point List for Faction's Models will also have a footer containing the following: Points Per Model (Does not include wargear), or, Points Per Model (Including Wargear)

You always have to pay points for wargear, unless the the points listing says "including wargear" at the top (typically only for named characters).

I just checked the Xenos 2 index:

The Gargoyles' weapons costs are 0, but you still have to "pay" for them.

Yes, the Swarmlord has to pay the 1 point for the tail and the 4 points for the boneswords.

Note that all these are for EACH model in the unit, so if you take adrenal glands or something, it's +1pt/model.

EDIT: I got ninja'd!

Made a little more muddy by the 'Power Level' system as well, though I prefer Power Level more.

Why would the Swarmlord have to pay for wargear? It is one of the 4 models that are PPM (Includes wargear).

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
