Daemon Princes now come with 8" movement as standard. I personally always liked modelling non-winged princes because the good daemon prince models (the generic CSM one and the Nurgle one) don't come with wings. Since they can abuse the character rules to not get shot at when behind another unit and having generally faster movement, are the wings upgrade manditory like last edition or are foot princes finally viable?

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

I've read that the wings are less of a have to than last ed but not too sure. I'm still running a winged prince and belakor in my army tho and it works pretty well.

I think wings are still basically mandatory, not because of the extra movement, but moving over models and terrain is so nice for assault based models.

I think a foot Prince with some Spawn support could work. They move roughly the same speed, and with spawnies bubble wrapping, the Prince shouldn't be shot at.

I used the leftover spare head, torso, arms, and back pieces from the Prince kit to make a second Prince with a serpent body. It used to be my Apotheosis Prince for the horrible Boon years. Ive been trying to see where he fits now.

Ive used a foot prince for dozen games or so, and hes been just fine. 8 inches plus advance is plenty fast enough to keep up with rhinos spawn dreads maulers etc etc. Put warptime on him if he needs a quick boost.

Wings are good for repositioning and hunting down isolated units, but a cheaper foot prince is dandy as a utility hq that supports your line.

Wings are fairly cheap for the things they grant.
* Extra movement
* Ability to ignore terrain
* Ability to leave assault and still shoot.
* Ability to fly over models.
* Ability to attack flyers (Thanks Latro_)

Why this matters
* A prince on foot can be surrounded by conscripts and trapped for the rest of the game. A prince with wings can leave and engage a more juicy target elsewhere. it's fairly easy to trap a model the size of a prince, as you simply have to keep it's base from being able to move over a friendly model.
* A 8" move vs a 12" move also is a big difference in threat area. Since the threat area of an assault unit is Move + 5", and the area of a circle is: A = π r2. This means the prince on foot has a threat range of 530.93" vs the winged prince with a threat area of 907.92"

Are princes on foot useless? No. They are still good. It's just that they are not the optimal choice.
If you are playing for casual games, it does not make any difference.

Rules-wise, I think wings are a no-brainer for all the reasons Labmouse just referenced.

Model-wise, wings are not needed to represent "daemonic flight" as it used to be called. These are creatures of another dimension afterall. Some are ethereal, others have mutations that can drive a man insane just at the sight of them. It is not a far stretch of the imagination to think that a non-winged DP can just hover, float or even fly

If you want to model a DP without Wings, but want to give them the 12" movement and Fly keyword, than just pay the points and say they have "deamonic flight"
Anyone who has an WYSIWYG issue with this does not have a clue what Chaos actually is and probably takes this game too seriously.

Done.

You guys missed one of the biggest reasons for wings:

So you can attack flyers in close combat!

FLY keyword is the main reason for wings. You can land on ruins, and move over other units. 8" range doesn't count for crap if you have a speed bump between you and your target.
