So, I'm my current life situation affords me the opportunity to read a not. Anyone have suggestions for good stuff in the 40k universe?

The more grimdark the better.

I started reading (a few pages) of a novel a coworker had, but can't remember what it was. It followed guardsmen on an imperial planet and the book opens with chaos infiltration at a port or something. Was engaging enough.

Froth at the top, dregs at the bottom, but the middle - excellent

Krieg! What a hole...

Dead Men Walking and Down Amongst the Dead Men, if you're into grimdark.

Dead men walking sounds interesting, but I can't find it for a reasonable price online.

The Night Lords trilogy is my favorite series of books in all of 40k, even including Dan Abnett's stuff. Read those, then if you want more grimdark, Cadian Blood and Fifteen Hours (both available in various Imperial Guard anthologies) are gritty and bleak.

All of the above are very good recommendations.

Also the Word Bearer trilogy. The first book in particular is fairly horrific.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

1. Eisenhorn. Probably the best 40k book written to date.

2. Fire caste. The name is missleading. The most 40k and most grimdark book I've read in a while.

3. Commissar Cain. First book is called "for the Emperor". Something like humorous swashbuckling 40k adventure. It definetly has its dark moments, but is more light fun then the others.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

you can find it in the black library and also on amazon under Honour imperialis. I have read only Cadian blood and Dead men walking and I can say its worth it for those two alone. The Cadian one is a little corny but still really good.

I rather like Death of Integrity.
