Trying to make sure I understand Shooting Phase regarding Choosing Targets and rolling dice. Haven't played yet and reading 8th edition rules so if I ask something dumb I apologize :-)

1. As I understand 1 to many models make up a unit. This is obvious.
2. If during Choose Targets I have a unit with 3 models and the enemy has a unit with 3 models and ONE of my models can see ANY of the models in the other unit I can choose that enemy unit to fire at.
3. If I score hits I can kill the whole unit even though I cannot see some of the models in it.

The above all make sense to me. What I am not getting is this; Same scenario as above.
1. Do I get to roll dice for every model OR only the models within MY unit that can see (los) the enemy unit.
2. As wounds are taken does this change as cover would?

FWIW I think my answer is that during Choose Target every model has to declare what it is shooting at. I just wanted to confirm as it seemed unclear to me 100% cause the Choose Targets seemed to indicate select the Unit/s your unit will be shooting at.

1. Each of your models must have the range and line of sight on the unit they are firing at - even if it's just one model of the enemy unit. The damage they inflict can wipe a squad they can only see one model of.
2. As wounds are taken, the only thing that changes would be the save - if for example two models of a unit were not in ruins/cover but as losses mounted leaving only the models in the ruins/cover, they would then get the additional cover save bonus.

So during Choose Target to be clear EVERY model in the Unit MUST declare what it is shooting at before anything happens and each Model MUST have LOS to what is is declaring?

Vanished Completely

In order to target an enemy unit,
a model from that unit must be within
the Range of the weapon being used (as
listed on its profile) and be visible to the
shooting model.

- 2. Choose Targets

I really, really, really do not like the way they have written Step 2 as it merges 'Unit level' and 'Model Level' events together... but when hasn't Game Workshop done that?
There is also a degree of analog thinking that is required, we need to know what the Shooting Model will be doing during Steps 3 and 4 just to make Step 2 function properly....

Thus, inform your opponent which weapons will be firing at which Targets during Step 2, as we have to confirm Range and Line of Sight at this point in the sequence.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
