Let me get this strait, because I'm as the title said, confused.

When the indexes came out I bought a contingent of Space Marines and AdMech
To be specific,
SM: 1 unit of 3 aggressors, 1 Captain in Gravis armor, and 1 Vindicator Laser destroyer
AM: Belisarius, 1 Tech priest, 1 datasmith, 4 Kastelans, 2 Dragoons, 1 Onager, and 20 Skitarii Vanguard.

I ran them as separate detachments as to not invalidate that they were of the same faction (imperium)
However since the codex's have came out I'm seeing that Space Marines and AdMech do not get their chapter tactics, forge world dogmas, stratagems, and all kids of other thing because the army isn't "battle forged" from my understanding of the whole thing from before the codexes was that because they were in separate detachments they still would receive the benefits.

Am I wrong on the whole matter and if I want these benefits have to split them in to two armies?

As long as they're in separate detachments, they'll get the benefits. You're good.

There is no one Rule requiring the Army to be Battleforged in order to gain access to Chapter Tactics, Stratagems and the likes.
Each will have their own own qualifications, for example - Stratagems often require nothing more then a single Detachment of X be present in the Army.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

"Battle Forged" just means that you have a legally constructed army using the correct amount of units for each detachment, and that each detachment and the army as a whole share common keywords. You did it the right way. Your army is battle forged, but you still have separate SM and AM detachments that should qualify for chapter tactics etc.

CSM & Space Marine chapter tactics are locked behind the "if army is battle-forged".

If Khorne needs blood, will drown him in his own blood!
If Slaanesh wants pleasure, then we´ll give him DEATH, the greatest pleasure known to man!
If Tzeentch asks for forbidden knowledge, then we will enlighten him with fear of The God Machine!
If Nurgle wants us to embrace rebirth, then to hell with that, the Guard embrace Death, we live to DIE!

Ok phew! I had the chaos players I play with tell me the whole army had to be the same.
I really am liking my army as it stands and I forgot to list my leviathan dread!

In this section you’ll find rules for Battle-forged armies that include....
- Start of the Section, this one taken from Codex: Chaos Space Marines...
So there is a single spot stating the following Rules are all for 'Battle Forged,' aside from their own internal qualifications including the same which is what I pointed to.

Opening Poster,
Keep in mind that Battle Forged simply means that you must organize all the units in your army into Detachments, as per page 240
