Subject: Newbie Question regarding building models ie.. Paladin Paragon

OK I am new to 40k
I have a brand new box of Grey Knight Paladins. I also have the codex.
I play a lot of board games and am use to things being very defined and not as much customization.
I figured it out BUT how could I have confirmed from the model instructions from the box OR the codex the following
1. The box never mentions the Paragon but he must be in a Paladin Squad. I realized from common sense that the Paragon is the Justicar with the Book/Crossed Swords above his head. HOW from the codex would I know how to denote which model my Paragon is. I assume in some way the answer is going to be build what you want but I want to make sure I am not missing something
2. The Standard Barrier is mentioned in the model instructions but no mention in the codex. I am confused on how to build the Brother Ancient for example. Does he have the same standard because on one comes in the box.
3. Regarding Grey Knight models. Where is the Librarians? Are they the terminator box built a certain way? Same question for Chaplins.
Thank you in advance and sorry for the stupid questions.

All that matters is the Datasheets, what the Models actually look like is entirely up to you.
If you want the Paragon of your Gray Knight Paladins to be an different Citadel Model entirely, then the only thing stopping you is an opponent deciding not to play or the Tournament Organizer denying you entry. Very few players are going to have an issue as long as the Model is unique enough to stand out, as most "Sargent" have different stat lines to the rest of the Unit, and fit the rough shape they expect the model to be. This could be anything from a standard Paladin being given a unique Pauldron design to signify that he is the Paragon, to something as elaborate as being the only model holding a book and sword over their head. Assuming the Model being used isn't too different, of course, as no one will let a Land Raider model be a Paragon even if the Rules only care about using 'Citadel Models.'
This also goes for the Brotherhood Ancient - Feel free to make your own banner if you are skilled enough, or select one from the many that have been produced over time.
As for the Librarians, technically... all of them are Librarians, ....
Such a Mary-Sue Faction if ever there was one, one guess who made them!

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures. |

You can look the model pics in the codex for modelling hints, but most of this stuff is indeed just up to personal taste. As long as the guys have the right gear, it really doesn't matter.
The above head bits are good ways to denote squad leaders and characters though. Also, Paladins are usually depicted wearing more ornate shoulder mini shields, while the regular terminators get plainer ones. And yes, the Ancients are indeed the standard bearers, if you need to distinguish between Brotherhood and Paladin ancients, I suggest using the shoulder shields.
As for Chaplain and Librarian, You can use regular marine terminator Chaplains and Librarians, or of course if you like you can convert them using the Grey Knight terminator box contents and some random bits.
