So I've been loving the new Death Guard that's been released. Split the box with a friend who took marines and I happily took the Death Guard. Also bought Mortarion last weekend.

I've painted up the majority of the box set, just working on finishing touches but I've been struggling to come up with a base theme for them. I had settled on a snow/ice winter theme which I think will contrast nicely with the dark coloured death guard green. I did quite a bit of research on snow and ice effects, watched several youtube videos.

Would very much appreciate any criticisms or comments on my test base for my new snow/ice theme below

Here's a decent overall top down shot of a frozen, cracked ice stream.

Was able to get a good puffy type snow

Looks cool, and I like the effect.

The blue seems a little rich for a stream that shallow. As modelers we often do have to exaggerate things to make them show, but as a close up pic with no mini on it, that just looks fake.

If you have flowing water on your planet, you might want to add some frozen tutfs of grass. Unless that blue is frozen chemical run-off. In which case, it works well for a frozen ash waste.

Your snow looks a lot like melting snow to me. Here is the first image I got from google: http://www.publicdomainpictures.net/pictures/10000/velka/2527-1276296606f4DY.jpg
Just like the picture, your snow is a bit granular. But it's mostly the way the snow is spread out that makes me think of melting snow: you have small lumps of snow, which are pretty tall yet far from each others, with boundaries that are pretty steep. When snow melts, it's partly from the bottom, as the sunlight heats the ground that isn't fully covered.
However when snow falls, it first creates a thin layer on the whole surface.

I'm sorry I sound so negative, because your base is actually very nice. I just wanted to detail my first impression, and add something to the discussion (although I have no clue how to do things differently).

Thanks for the comments. I'll work on lightening up the blue, maybe more of a light blue-grey
