Hi All,

After a many hours of reading Dakka and reading rules this area is still a cause for concern. I am interested if this is what people are actually doing in their games.

So, the rules that apply on dice rolls is: roll first, (immediate effect), then modifier to adjusts roll, (final effect)

A unit fires at another unit rolls to hit: 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6 Assumption is 3+ to hit, 8 hits, 4 misses. If the unit had a re-roll misses ability then the 4 misses would be re-rolled.

Same unit fires at another unit (with a -1 to hit) rolls to hit 1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5,6,6 Assumption is 3+hit so 8 hits and 4 misses THEN -1 modifier is applied 1,1,1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5 so actually 6 hits and 6 misses.

Do I then get 4 re-roll misses or 6 re-rolls? (I would normally take 6 re-rolls but now I am unsure)

So is a re-roll on misses applied twice or once after or before modifers? Or is this a rule change to reduce the effectiveness on general re-rolls? Has no effect on re-rolling "1's".

This would therefore be a huge advantage if it was -2 or better on general re-rolls.

Rerolls happen before modifiers. You only get to re-roll the natural 1 and 2's, even though the 3's would miss later. In this case you'd only re-roll the 1's and 2's and then the 3's would miss.

Yes, it's stupid but that's how GW want to do things.

Concur on how stupid it is... but that is the way they want it done, Re-roll before Modifiers.
One would think they would just embrace the game term 'natural' when it comes to dice rolls.....

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Slightly OT but note Belisarius Cawl is the exception with a rule that states "my reroll any to-hit rolls" without mention of any pass or fail criteria.

So he gets to reroll those 3's that are hits but later won't be.

There are a few handful of 'Re-roll anytime' Rules and I like to use them as examples of how they solve this little problem!
They even caused a few problems in and of themselves, within previous editions, just by existing... but that is now history.

It is my oppinon that nothing 'broken' occurs if you have an open ended Re-roll as the Players themselves will ensure they are used as intended 99.95% of the time. This will mean a 're-roll to hits' are going to be used on the results that will lead to failures, as the Player making that decision wants successes. It is only when you want it to be a penalty, such as forcing re-rolls of successful hits, that you need to be so specific about which dice must be re-rolled. That tiny 0.05% is not just so situational it isn't worth worrying about either, as it just opens the door to greater tactical decisions by the Players. Even rarer within 8th edition to encounter one of those 'I want to keep the unit Tar-pitted' situations, seeing the opponent can just opt to fall back anyway.
