I think most people can agree that 8th edition has been a successfully launched and is an improvement over 7th edition. So what happens over the coming years? With 7 Codex releases this year, how many do you think we will be seeing in 2018? Will 8th edition actually be able to achieve what many thought impossible. To have all factions furnished with a decent codex within a reasonably short period of time? Also; do you think that we will see an equivalent to AOS General's Handbook? Is it the case that we will never actually see a "9th edition" in the traditional sense?

That's going to be the yearly Chapter Approved I believe.

Announced back at the start of June on Warhammer Community:

Last up, we got our first look at Chapter Approved 2017, a new book on its way later this year.

We’ve said right from the start that the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 is one that we’d work to make even better over time. This is one of the ways that will happen. Each year, you’ll have a new Chapter Approved, expanding your gaming options and making what we think is already the best Warhammer 40,000 ever, even better.

Expect the first Chapter Approved book in time for Christmas.

Wow thanks for that. Totally missed that post on the community website.

Hoping this yearly CA book will contain formalised FAQ and Errata to the rule book, new missions, and updated point tables for all factions.

Maybe even use it as an opportunity to introduce some new rules (better terrain and LOS rules for example). This may be hard to do though without bloating the rules again, no one wants to go back to the horror that was 7th

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.

To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

I like 7th more than 8th.

I think that gw should add rules as modules. So if you want to use advance rules for terrain and cover then you addnthat module to your system. If you want to use advanced flyer or advanced psyker rules, then you add those modules, and so on...
This way we could also simplify rules when playing larger points games and add more detailed finer grained rules when playing smaller point games, thereby creating a truly scalable rules system.

Oh and I would like to see different activation mechanics included there as well.

2018 we'll see the first Chapter Approved that should clear up a lot, merge all the current FAQ's, add a few missions and other bits, and also retweak a lot of point values across the board.

I expect that through 2018 we'll see a lot of the rest of the Codexes filled out. There really shouldn't be that many Codexes left to update by the end of 2018. Not every Codex will get models, as we've seen with Astra Militarum, Grey Knights, Chaos Marines, and AdMech (and likely Craftworld Eldar and Tyranids), but I'd bet that about 4 of them will.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say that Codexes like Thousand Sons, Deathwatch, Genestealer Cult, Harlequins, and others that were updated near the end of 7th, or that already have mostly plastic lines, will probably not get new model releases.

My hope is that Codexes like World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Orks, and, of course, Sisters of Battle, will see full model releases alongside their Codexes as we go through 2018. Not all of these will, but those that don't in 2018 will likely see updates in 2019.

Allegedly there will be some points adjustments from codices coming out next year in it. Hopefully we will see that fabled Riptide balancing.

Hopefully they also revisit point costs in units that have already had a codex released. DG could use some adjustments for units like Deathshroud who are 10-20 points over costed for what they bring.

I'm sorry to hear that. Considering the direction the game has gone you must be unhappy. I think the original posters statement is probably spot on though. The majority of people seem to like 8th quite a bit.

I'm not UNHAPPY, but I could be happier.

8th isn't bad. (With that in mind, 7th wasn't actually that GOOD either. ) But I've got my preference. I still play 8th, I have fun with it, but if I could have a group to go back, I would.

Everyone has their own thoughts on the matter. My gaming group for example could never go back to 7th, the difference is night and day - for us at least
