Can someone clarify that if the closest character is hiding out of LOS and is the closest model, I cannot target a character in plain view that is further away? I barely won my last game because I could not shoot at 3 other characters in the open because of character rules?

I moved so starting from scratch. These were the armies I had, rebuilding my Chaos.

From the designers commentary

Q: If a model cannot shoot at the closest visible enemy
unit for some reason (e.g. it is within 1" of one of
your units) but the next closest visible enemy unit is a
Character, can that model then target the character?
A: No.

I dont agree with that ruling, but if everyone else is exploiting it...thats a horrible rule lol

It doesn't matter if you don't agree, it's what the rules say. It's not even ambiguous in this case, it's an FAQ because people don't like what the rule says.
Just because you don't like it doesn't make it an exploit. I despise the fact you can fall back with zero real consequence but I don't call it an exploit, because it isn't.

The FAQ question/answer isn't relevant to the OP question.

In the OP question the answer is the further character can be shot because the closest character is not visible. You can target a character only if it is the closest visible unit, if their is anything unit close but out of Los it is not viaible- making the other character the closest visible unit.

The FAQ answer has both the units being viaibile, op question does not.

Agreed,
Visibility is a key element in determining if the Character can be Targeted or not.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.
