On a long forgotten world, under the glow of a dying Sun, they gathered.
Sixteen of the Galaxies most lethal hand to hand combatants.
Some came out of duty, some out of hubris, others for the sheer glory or carnage that awaited.
And so unto the Arena of Death did they step.....

GW did an article years and years ago in a White Dwarf pitting some of the best 40k hand to hand fighters against each other in a knockout style fight to the death. Cant recall who won but I think it was the Bloodthirster.
I replicated it back in 2nd ed for fun (the top three winners depending on dice were usually a kitted out Hive Tyrant, Bloodthirster or the Avatar) so I decided to run it again for 8th out of interest.

Pairings were made using this handy tool
https://www.teamopolis.com/tools/round-robin-generator.aspx

Rules:
1 round each – winner goes through.
Special abilities can be used e.g. Kharns double attacks, explodes on death etc.
Both sides counts as having charged so abilities that benefit or counter charging can be used.
This is a straight up hand to hand fight – no shooting or psychics allowed (I might incorporate them at a later date but wanted to keep it simple first time around).
Aura abilities affect said combatant.
If a double KO happens the fight goes to a sudden death stage where the first unsaved wound wins.

FYI: I only used models I actually had or could decently proxy so calls for Girlyman, Typhus or Lilieth will have to wait!
I had thought about throwing in an IK or WK but figured their wound count was just too high.

So.....place your bets and enjoy the Arena of Death!!!

Round 1 pairings:
1 Helbrecht VS Yarrick
2 Ghaz VS Nightbringer
3 Abaddon VS Imotek
4 Kharn VS Asurmen
5 Swarmlord VSJain Zar
6 Broodlord VS Avatar
7 Hissy VS Ragnar
8 Logan VS Bjorn

Helbrecht VS Commissar Yarrick.

The first fight sees the swordsman Helbrecht take on the Saviour of Hades Hive.

Analysis: This looks like it could be quite an even fight. Both fighters will hit on 2+ (Yarricks aura +1 to hit rule) and also wound on 2+. However Helbrecht has significantly more attacks especially the first round charge.
Both will have to fall back on their 4+ invs to survive with Helbrechts increased wounds possibly balancing out against Yarricsk 3+ res roll.

Spoiler:

Both fighters charge in and score an early wound on each other.
Round 2 and 3 sees Yarrick chip wounds of Helbrecht before Helbrecht hits back in round 4 scoring 2 more wounds.
At this stage both fighters are down to 1 wound…..
Round 5 exhaustion kicks in and no wounds are scored.
Helbrecht swings hard in round 6 though and downs Yarrick! However Yarrick rolls Iron Will and he passes his 3+ resurrection save.
It goes to a 7th round and with one final clash its a double KO!
Sudden Death begins and after a few rounds of back and forth Yarrick decapitates Helbecht with his Ork Powerklaw!
Yarrick wins and goes through to the next round.

Ghazghull Thraka VS The Nightbringer.

Fight number 2 sees Ghazzy take on Nightbringer.

Analysis: Another fairly even looking fight with both fighters hitting and wounding hard. Both will hit on 2+ and wound on 3+ with Ghaz just missing out on a 2+ to wound with Str12 Vs T7. Again both will have to fall back on their inv saves to survive as both of their attacks do significant damage with NB possibly having the advantage with d6 damage.

Spoiler:
Round one sees the Nightbringer lash out scoring a big 5 unsaved wounds on Ghaz.
Ghaz hits back however scoring 3 wounds on NB.
Round 2 Nightbringer enrages and scores a whopping 10 wounds on Ghaz but not before the Warlord takes 6 off NB.
Sudden Death again!
With an eerie timelss wail NB scores the first unsaved wound and rips Ghazs head off.
Nightbringer goes through!

Abaddon the Despoiler VS Imotek the Stormlord.

The Despoiler squares off against the mighty Imotek in fight 3.

Analysis: Stats and probability go to Abby in this one. Both will hit on 2+ but Abby has the option of which weapon to use trading either significantly more attacks VS a higher strength. Both will wound on 3+ and again use their inv saves to survive. Imoteks regeneration might be a fight winner however healing d3 at the start of each subsequent fight phase but the Talon does do multiple damage.

Spoiler:
Abaddon scores first blood with 2 wounds on Imo without reply.
However Imotek regenerates 1 lost wound calling on his protocols to activate.
In round 2 Abaddon unleashes the Talon of Horus and obliterates Imotek scoring 8 wounds without reply.
Abaddon goes through with a total slaughter!

Kharn the Betrayer Vs Asurmen

Fight 4 sees the potential making of a classic as the Betrayer takes on Asurmen.

Analysis: This has the potential to be a true classic. Both will hit on 2s and wound on 3s with multiple weapon damage. Asurmen has a better inv save and can also potentially dish out mortal wounds but Kharn will get to fight twice…..
For this fight Kharn could fight a second time but only after both combatants had fought one round simultaneously.

Spoiler:
Both combatants swing and hit/wound well in the first round.
Kharn suffers 2 normal wounds as Asurmen suffers 3.
However Asurmen rolls a 6 for one of his wound rolls and follows up with a d3 roll of a 5 scoring 3 outright mortal wounds!
Kharn is sucked into the warp howling in rage (he didn’t even get a second chance to attack!).

The Swarmlord VS Jain Zar.

Swarmy takes on the Howling Banshee Queen in fight 5.

Analysis: Swarmy probably edges JZ here with better STR and T. Both fighters will hit on 2s but maybe crucially Swarmy is wounding on 2+ compared with JZ on 5s (with a reroll). Swarmy has a 4+ inv to fall back on whereas JZ is saving on 5s but can attack twice.
For this fight JZ is allowed a single fight phase without reply before both combatants fight simultaneously.

Spoiler:
JZ opens with her first flurry of attacks but fails to wound Swarmy.
They then both fight simultaneously with Swarmy scoring an incredible 10 unsaved wounds. JZ tries to rally but Swarmy passes all of his saves and slaughters Jain Zar outright!

The Broodlord VS The Avatar.

The mighty Broodlord takes on the Avatar of the Eldar in fight 6.

Analysis: The Avatar probably edges this one due to higher STR and wound count.
Both will hit on 2s but the Avatar will wound on 3s compared to Broodlords 5s (with a reroll). They both have 5+ inv which will be needed but the Avatar has more wounds.
Spoiler:

Both fighters swing viciously and score several unsaved wounds on each other.
However with multiple damage from each weapon the Avatar has scored 6 compared to Broodlords 4 and the Avatar bellows in triumph.

Hissy the Hive Tyrant Vs Ragnar Blackmane.

Hissy Queen of the Hive takes on Ragnar in fight 7.

Hissy warn Ratiusss. Hissy better win this fight and the whole competition or there isss going to be hell to pay.

And here I was thinking you’d slip me a cheeky bribe or something Hissy.

Hisssssss!

Analysis: This could be a close matchup. Both fighters are hitting on 2s and wounding on 3s.
Ragnar has a better inv save but Hissy has more wounds and potentially more weapon damage.

Spoiler:
Ragnar scores two early wounds on Hissy who starts nervously scoring no wounds with her main weapon. Amazingly though she scores 2 wounds with her prehensile tail.
Round 2 and nerves continue with both fighters fluffing badly.
In Round 3 Hissy scores two unanswered wounds on Ragnar.
Round 4 both fighters tire and again no wounds are caused!
Ragnar rallies in round 5 scoring 2 wounds on Hissy but she fights back scoring a final unsaved wound on Ragnar. Hissy retreats to her Hive for a nice long bath.

Yaaaay! Go Queen Hissssy! Hissy is the besssst!

Oh show some class Hissy please…..

Bjorn the Fell Handed VS Logan Grimnar.

In the final fight of Round 1 Bjorn takes on his old friend Logan.

Analysis: Another interesting matchup. Both fighters will hit on 2+ with rerolls but Bjorn will be crucially wounding on 2s with a reroll versus Logan wounding on 4s. However Logan has a better inv save.
Spoiler:

Round one sees Logan suffer 2 wounds but rallies well scoring 3 unsaved wounds on Bjorn.
Feeling little loyality however Bjorn scores a whopping 10 unsaved wounds in round 2 whilst Logan can only muster 2 back.
Bjorn thrusts Trueclaw deep into Logan and carries him off aloft.

So there we have it. Round 1 is complete and we are down to our final 8. Heres how the Round 2 pairings shape up.
Place your bets!

Spoiler:

1 Swarmy VS Avatar
2 Hissy VS Asurmen
3 Nightbringer VS Bjorn
4 Yarrick VS Abaddon

I really like this, it would be great to see a python code to run this as a monte carlo simulation with 10000 or even 100,000 iterations to illuminate luck as much as possible.

Our quarter finals conclude tonight!

Matchups:

Swarmlord VS The Avatar

Hissy VS Asurmen

Bjorn the Fell Handed VS Nightbringer

Abaddon VS Yarrick

Swarmlord VS Avatar.

Analysis: The battle of the heavy weights in this one. Both will hit on 2s. However Swarmy will wound on 3s as the Avatar wounds on 4s. Both weapons deal significant damage but Swarmy has a better inv save and slightly more wounds.

Spoiler:
Both fighters come out swinging in a storm of carnage. The Avatar does two unsaved wounds inflicting a massive 9 damage on Swarmy. However the King of the Tyranids hits back causing 8 wounds on the Avatar and felling it stone dead.

Swarmy continues his run.

Hissy VS Asurmen.

You have been warned again Ratiusss…..

Analysis: Potentially a great matchup. Both will hit on 2s but crucially Hissy will wounds on 3s against Asurmens 5s (with potential mortals). Both weapons do decent damage but possibly key is Asurmens 3+ inv versus Hissys 5+.

Spoiler:
Again both fighters come storming out. Asurmen inflicts 2 unsaved wounds which do 4 normal damage and another 2 mortal. Hissy is down to 2 wounds.

However she fights back savagely dealing 6 unsaved damage to Asurmen (who fails two unlucky 3+ invs) and wins with a first round KO.

Hissy goes through.

Bjorn VS Nightbringer.

Analysis: A tough matchup for each fighter. Bjorn will hit and wound on 2s with rerolls which could be a big factor. Nightbringer will hit on 2s but versus vehicles is only STR7 meaning he will only wound on 5s. Both weapons however deal huge damage and NB has a 4+ inv versus Bjorns 5+ FNP (which he must save each point of damage with).

Spoiler:
Round 1 seems both fighters strike telling blows dealing 5 damage each.

Round 2 NB misses several times and Bjorn chips another wound from him.

In round 3 NB scores 3 more wounds on Bjorn and downs him. However before he falls Bjorn retaliates dealing a massive 11 unsaved damage to NB.

It goes to Sudden Death!

Both cause unsaved wounds in the first round of sudden death so it goes to round 2.

Nightbringer tires however in the second and scores no wounds. Bjorn hits back causing 2 unsaved wounds and goes through to the semi finals!

Abaddon VS Yarrick.

Analysis: On paper this looks terribly one sided in favour of Abaddon. He will hit and wound on 2s if he uses the Talon. Switching to Drachy’an he has the potential to deal a huge number of attacks on 3s with rerolls. Yarrick will hit on 2s and wound on 3s with both having a 4+ inv.

Spoiler:
Yarrick swings but fails to cause any wounds. Abaddon hits back using Drach scoring 10 hits. 6 unsaved damage are caused and Yarrick is felled.

However he passes his 3+ res roll and charges back into the fight.

In round 2 however again he fails to wound Abaddon who hits back again with Drach causing another 7 unsaved damage.

Yarrick tries to stumble back to his feet but this time fails his 3+ res and Abaddon storms through to the final!

So here is our semi final line up. The best 4 fighters left in the Galaxy – place your bets!

Spoiler:
Hissy VS Abaddon

Swarmlord VS Bjorn

Semi Final 1.

The first semi final clash sees Hissy take on Abaddon.

Feeling good Hissy?

Alwaysss ready for a fight Ratiusss…..

Well the Hive is definitely supporting you on this one.

Hisssss!

Analysis: Despite Hissys confidence Abaddon seems to have the advantage here. Both will hit on 2s but Abaddon can reroll. Hissy will wound on 3s as will Abaddon if he uses the Talon. However he can trade in for substantially more attacks albeit wounding on 5s. Abaddon will also save on 4+ whereas Hissy is on 5s.
Spoiler:

Round one sees Hissy missing badly scoring no wounds. Abaddon chooses to use Drach scoring a massive 9 hits. They are converted into 6 wounds and Hissy is on the ropes early.

Round two sees Hissy recovering scoring 2 wounds on Abaddon who suffers a further mortal wound as he rolls a 1 for Drachs attacks. He switches to the Talon however and scores another devastating 6 unsaved wounds.

Abaddon storms into the Grand Final.

Ratiusss…..Now. I’m. *&%^*^!.

Uh-oh.

Semi Final 2.

Another battle of the heavyweights as the Swarmlord takes on Bjorn the Fell Handed.

Analysis: This looks like a close enough match. Both will hit on 2s but Bjorn can reroll 1s. Swarmy will wound on 4s until he starts taking serious wounds but perhaps crucially Bjorn will wound on 2s with rerolls. Swarmy has a 4+ inv whereas Bjorn has a 5+ FNP on wounds unsaved. Both also do significant damage with their weapons.

Spoiler:
Round one sees Swarmy score an unlikely 2 early wounds with his prehensile tail. He follows up with some devastating attacks scoring another 7 unsaved wounds and Bjorn is felled.

Bjorn fights back valiantly however scoring a massive 9 unsaved wounds on Swarmy but its not enough to tie the battle.

Swarmy advances!

Grand Final.

And so the Grand Final commences. The Galaxies two best hand to hand combatants enter. Only one will leave crowned Grand Champion.

Spoiler:
Analysis: A wonderfully exciting fight in store. Both fighters will hit on 2s but Abaddon can reroll 1s. Swarmy will wound on 2s until he starts to take damage (crucially I forgot this for this fight). Abaddon has the choice to wound on 3s with 5 attacks or wound on 5s with significantly more. Both will save on 4+ inv with Swarmy having a lot more wounds but Abaddon halves all damage caused due to his armor.

Round one sees both combatants come out swinging. Abaddon scores 2 wounds as Swarmy replies with 1.

Round 2 Abaddon takes the initiative scoring 2 wounds as Swarmy misses badly.

Round three sees both fighters tire slightly with no wounds caused on either side.

Swarmy rallies in the fourth scoring 4 unsaved wounds on Abaddon as he strikes back scoring another.

Round 5 both fighters clash again with Abaddon scoring another 2 unsaved wounds. Swarmy drops into his second damage bracket and will now hit on 3s and wound on 3s! However he still manages to score another unsaved wound.

Both fighters make another monumental effort. Abaddon scores 2 more unsaved wounds leaving Swarmy with only 3 left and moving him into his final damage bracket.

However with a final defiant roar Swarmy swings all 4 of his Bone Sabres in unison and decapitates Abaddon scoring 5 unsaved wounds!

The Swarmlord is the Grand Champion of the first Arena of Death!

Congratulations Swarmy!

Look at his cheeky smirk.

I’m going to congratulate Swarmy privately in his chambersss…..

Roll the credits. Roll them now!!!
