I just received my shipment of FW stuff I ordered at GenCon. I noticed in their packages was a little guide on how to prep the models. Is the step about washing them in warm water totally necessary? How to you guys prep your FW stuff?

Totally necessary? No. Highly recommended? Yes.

The models have a release agent on them which helps their removal from the mold. If there's any residue of that agent left on the model then it will be near impossbile to get paint to stick to the area.

TBH I often have no reason to specifically wash the parts simply because a lot need immersing in warm water to straighten them for a good fit anyway.

Here's a fairly in-depth video Forge World has on their website:

What do you guys use to wash your models besides the water. Such as, adding a capful of purple power or dish soap etc...

Tub of warm water, dish soap (doesn't leave a residue), give a quick scrub with an old tooth brush and rinse them off.

The most time consuming part is drying them off, so if I'm feeling lazy and want to paint them straight away instead of water I'll give them a squirt with isopropyl alcohol and scrub them off, the excess alcohol evaporates quickly so you can get down to painting them. EDIT: Actually I probably wouldn't do the isopropyl thing to resin models on the chance they might react, but plastics and metals are fine.
