Just wondering if its a recast or legit?

Well... a picture would help i guess...

Apart from that i've never seen metal recasts. Most recasters use resin for everything. I know one recaster that actually sells plastic knights but thats about it. Never seen or heard of metal recasts.

Yeah, a metal recast would be a bizarre thing, to be sure, and I've never heard of a painted recast either.

Metal recasts are not common from the most accessible recasters, but they are available from a few sellers. Usually only metal models get recast in metal.

Painted though? Who knows? Or for that matter, who cares?
What makes you think it's a recast? Simply because it's from China?

Metal re-casts are actually very prevalent amongst Oldhammer minis --- loads of people selling suspiciously large amounts of "new" metal minis. The biggest hints are often lack of name on the tab, and odd gates.

People will pick out stuff they think is re-casting though pretty frequently and they're often wrong. Mold-shift is not a sign (it can be, but I've plenty of old GW metals with terrible mold-shift), and the shiny nature of the metal (again, had everything from white cakey metal to shiny metal straight from GW).

Very possible, particularly from a place like China. I've seen a load of these Chinese pro-paint shops do this. It's probably a sign when they have 5-6-7 of the same "metal" model up for sale, pro-painted. It's unlikely they're buying up the old ones on eBay and painting them --- far more likely they're recasting them and pumping them out.

Here ya go:

No less than nine "painted, metal" Maugan Ra's ---- all Hong Kong and China, and all painted identically. It's pretty damn likely this set of paintshops or users is just mass-recasting them, painting them and selling them on. You'll find this with a LOAD of character models from 40K.

Enjoy the model and the heft of its metal.

All of the recasts I've seen have double mold lines, but if your model is cleaned and painted it could be pretty hard to tell one way or another.

Honestly, I've seen official GW models in awful state before so you might just have a bad batch than a recast. I don't own any recasts but I doubt I woukd be able to tell the difference.

It's been a couple of weeks since we've ridden this train off the cliff.

To be blunt, if you are concerned about whether you are purchasing a recast I would suggest only purchasing packaged GW products. Otherwise you're rolling the dice and should just accept that.

Recasters can work with pewter, and if the item comes from china, it is most likely a recast. Same with russia. Ebay is boated with overpriced recasts these days.

Biggest thing to look for on pewter recasts is thickness of the model. Many times the molds can be too thin in some areas, like the face and legs.

Does it still look like Maugan-Ra?
Was it cheaper than GW?

If the answer to both of these is yes, keep it.

I have a few resin recasts that are impossible to tell from official models. I assume it is the same with metal recasts. If the recaster is good enough, it will be impossible to tell the difference simply because there won't be any difference.

This is all new to me! After a casual (20 year) hiatus from 40k im back and feel like a lost child wandering the realms of imperial knights and fliers and giant primarch models that are in plastic kits!
