Just wondering how easy is it to do?
Mainly as im honestly finding my loyalist army boring and with me wanting to do a renegade chapter having loyalist marines with destroyed aquilas in the army makes sense. Thoughts?

If you model them as an army very recently turned to Chaos (or gone renegade but not to Chaos), it can be pretty easy - they'd still have all their old equipment, and would merely have over-painted or defaced aquillas and other imperial symbols. Unless of course they're something like Alpha Legion and are having fun pretending to still be loyalists so they can then ambush anyone who foolishly believes them, in which case no changes might be needed at all...

Changes (e.g. mutations, special equipment, new banners) would probably be more visible higher up the ranks.

You haven't said whether they'd use loyalist or chaos rules - if the latter, then obviously some imperial equipment will no longer be available to them, but possibly could be converted to a chaos equivalent.

Thats one thing I find daft about Renegade chapters, they only have the Chaos equipment lists, where as a renegade chapter 'defecting' in M41 would have everything they had as Imperial.

Sure, they cant replace lossed items, just as Chaos or older Renegades cant, but its not like they turn against the Imperium and immediately throw away all their nice shiny equipment.

It also seems daft that CSM cant have captured/defiled Imperial equipment, like vehicles.

I've been of the opinion that Chaos should have rules to act like a template that could be applied to any army, kinda like the Ynarri are.

To be fair...the Renegades isn't really a thing in the new CSM - it's just a catch-all for non-legion styled bands of Chaos Marines.

They won't do a proper renegade marine list (and thankfully so) because it would just be more arguing and more confusion.

PS: CSMs are easy to make out of MkIV and MkIII kits. I have almost zero CSM components in my army, but people walk up and say "Oh, Chaos Space Marines?"...just make them dirty.

The reason renegades don’t have their loyalist equipment is because while they may have those special vehicles, weapons and armor in a vault somewhere, they don’t have the vast resources of the Imperium to supply them with the incredibly rare ammunition, fuel and replacement parts those things require to function, which regular space marines take for granted with their unlimited access to the riches of a galaxy-spanning empire.

Alternatively, it’s a way to differentiate between two armies via some unimaginative rules that have been grandfathered into every edition.

Basically as little or as much conversion work as you require.

Some chaos marines will simply deface their imperial iconography.

Check out these recent defected to the Red Corsairs:

This is a picture from a previous chaos codex!

Made with predominately loyalist pieces. Featured in the 2nd ed Codex... looks an awful lot like Crimson Slaughter, right?!

The majority of my Chaos Space Marine force is made from MkIV and MkIII models from the Horus Heresy kits as I mentioned above. They're not Aquila-branded and they're actually more suitable for fellows lost in the warp.

Here's a few examples of my "Chaos" Space Marines. They're benign enough that I can run them as a rusty Chaos Renegades or simply loyal marines who've forgotten to touch up their armour. Some gritty colour schemes and some chipped armour works a treat. The main Chaos element you'll see is a handful of Chaos backpacks.

Using the same kit and some 3rd party bits I made my own version of Plague Marines which are far less crazy than the new kits.

It's very easy...and as long as you keep the wargear options legit, you're good to go.

That's a good point on the backpacks; the 'right' backpacks really do a great job at creating a silhouette that screams 'chaos marine'.
