Im looking into getting a game board setup with an urban environment like a wartorn city sector or similar. Something with lots or ruins, buildings and stuff like that. Im hoping to get some feedback if anyone here have played/plays on these and can give some feedback. As of now its come down to two options.
The first Secret Weapon's "Destroyed Urban Streets" which is a set of 24 1x1ft tiles of various design that seem to be getting great reviews from those who tried them out.
These are sturdy hard plastic pieces with nice details, and 24 pieces offer a lot of alternatives when setting them up. The cons, IMO, is that these are more or less plain flat pieces. While it makes it easier to setup buildings and scenery pieces, the lack of elevation makes it a bit dull and uninteresting.
The second is Ziterdes "Modular Gaming Table" (MGT). These are thinner plastic mold pieces that are 2x2ft and their sci-fi range comes in three different pieces. The cons of these would be the lesser variation in setup as there are only three designs to them, and that the thinner plastic has a bit of flex to them even if they do seem sturdy enough to not be an issue.
But the big pro to these would be that they are designed with elevation. There are walkways, walls, and raised areas and all the pieces can be rotated and joined together to offer a wide variety of 3D terrain where elevation becomes a big part!
This does mean that building and scenery placement becomes more difficult as there are less flat surfaces to house them but there ARE flat tiles as well.
Come winter ill be having brought my army up to 2000p or close to it and will be starting to build my table and terrain and want to get an idea of what ill be doing before then som I'm currently looking into every possible option.
So any feedback on these would be greatly appreciated as well as tips and pointers I might have overlooked when it comes to making an urban play area.
Thanks

Skip the tiles and get a mat.
You don't want to roll dice on plastic or constantly be touching up your plastic boards after you paint them.

Not to mention mats quiet the dice. From sharp splatters to gentle little plops. I love the sound of dice on a fatmat.

Hey, thanks for the reply!
I do own a neoprene mat from DeepCutStudios and like it very much but I want a more textured and interesting surface to play on!
I also prefer to keep dice off the play area to not clutter the tabletop or accidentally move terrain and miniatures around. Beside the actual tabletop there is room for dice rolls and beer holders!

Terrain tutor just did a thing with acrylic caulk and a roll of cotton canvus.
but for urban..
the matt is probably your best and cheapest option unless you want to get crafty with MDF and card stock.

We ended up going with the damaged urban board from SW.
It is a ton of work to paint up to a good standard, but it looks amazing, is pretty modular, and works great with the offical GW ruins kits we built to top it.
In regards to elevation, we built some of the ruins with 3 levels which is ended up being around 12" tall.
This is a shot of the table before weathering powders and washes.

My group plays with an a LOT of ruined terrain, so as from gaming experience i highly suggest multiple full LOS blocking base blocks for any terrain. (think buildings with all opaque windows and or boarded up entrances and windows) it could be the base floor for another building that was built on top of it.
3" high by typical building sizes like 10" x 10" ish.
or walls or other things.
LOS blockers makes the game more interesting than just i shoot you shoot turn 2 game is over.

When we built our ruins, we made sure to keep all windows layed out in way that buildings blocked LOS.
