So the guys on beast of war are reviewing the codex and brought up the interesting potential that the Valhallans infantry order, which allows you to shoot into close combat, could potentially free tanks from close combat and allow them to fire that turn. What would happen would essentially be this.

1. Your Valhallan tank gets charged by the enemy in the enemy's turn
2.Your turn in the movement phase, you keep the tank in combat, you do not fall back
3. Your shooting phase, you order an infantry unit nearby to fire into the enemy unit that charged the tank, and somehow kill everything charging the tank
4. The tank is now sitting in the open, no longer engaged in combat, and it did not fall back, so theoretically it could now fire, and even charge, in this same turn.

Am I reading this right? Makes the Valhallan order a situational but potentially game saving order if that's the case.

That is 100% correct. The game doesn't check if you're able to fire at the start of a phase, it checks when you select that unit to fire, which funnily enough you can't even do if it's within 1" of an enemy to begin with.

Yep, OP has it correct.

This would only work if the infantry unit was also in a melee, which does not necessarily have to be the same one the Russ is in.

Youre thinking of the Vostroyan one, which lets vostroyans fire their own weapons while engaged in close combat.

Valhallan allows your infantry unit to fire at an enemy unit thats locked in combat with a friendly unit. So for example you could order a mortar Heavy weapon squad to fire into a combat between a squad of chaos space marines and your Leman Russ.
