It's about the same price to get two chaos spawn as to get something like a box of Cult CSM, or a Rhino. Are two spawn really worth it, gameplay wise? Or is it just a price hike for the unique models?
I love the freeform designs you can do, but i'd rather not fork that much for two models that will just collect shelf dust.

Spawn are at best "ok". They mainly function as an easy way to fill out a brigade. I wouldn't take them otherwise.

I was able to collect a bunch of them through hand-me-downs, ebay and my local store. I've used them in 8th a couple times, and while I wouldn't say they're great, they can be pretty suprising. They can throw a ton of attacks with each doing 2 damage at -2 modifier. Their latest claim to fame was tentacle slapping a bunch of Custodes, and it was fun to see the golden boys get murdered by hideous monsters.
I think in the right type of list they can be decent, but it's an expensive commitment. I mostly have them for big games and flavor, i think the models are great.

No stratagems for them, but the simple reroll helps tons and i'm sure you could find leadership abilities to stack.

Oh yeah. They are Heretic Astartes <Legion> so they benefit from those buffs. I run Black Legion so Abaddon tricks them out fierce. Reroll to hit, extra attacks on 5+ vs. Loyalists, immunity to morale.

I have been using them in conjunction with my Night Lords. I tried running them in pairs, but found that they didn't have much of an impact that way. To easy to take out, and not quite enough punch.
So I upped them to 3-4 depending on how many points I might have free. I did find that they held their own much better, being able to take a turn of shooting and still having the numbers to hit in the fight phase. And if you are rolling well for their attacks they can pack a punch, especially since they are -2Ap, and 2dmg each hit.
If you are going to run them solo or as a pair don't expect too much more other than a distraction unit.

The Daemon Possessing Fulgrim's Body

I've finally blagged a donor kit off eBay to start doing my conversions that I've had planned for 18m or more, at a price I was willing to pay so the extra bits etc didn't send the cost sky high, so well before 8th and the new Codex, when they were decent.
So probably not.

The spawn box is wonderful in the bitz, but horribly overpriced (even by GW's standards) for what it gives you.
I would recommend getting a stick of GS and use it to make multiple bodies to stick the extra bitz to so you can get more spawns out of the box.
As for in-game use, I haven't used them in 8th ed so I can only speculate. Looks like it's a good distraction carnifex in large numbers but don't expect miracles.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

They can actually do good work as a Cultist alternative for preventing Deep Strikes.

I think they compete well with Plague Drones now, which move faster, have an invul, DR, and consistent number of attacks.
Spawn do have the advantage of better ap (potentially), the - 1 LD, and damage 2.
Im sticking with Spawn since I have 11 of the gribblys, but for a new collector, I'd suggest plague drones. For 1 pt more, you get a better tar-pit.

I'm terms of savings, one box of spawn, plus a few extra bodies off ebay, and some clever kit bashing from marine torsos and Tyranid parts got me about 9 spawn. That kit is amazing.
