Thinking about adding some Talos Pain Engines to my DE list, but given how expensive the dang things are, I'm wondering how many you need to run for them to be effective. Thoughts?

Hi, I am a big fan of those things and usually run 5 or 6 plus a cronos in 7th edition. I've tried them only a couple of times, one full unit of 3 talos. They're far from being the monsters they used to be but the may still be useful.

Their standard weapon is a decent anti infantry and in close combat they're still decent, they're main purpose in my games was to mess deep striking enemy units that usually avoid to appear near the monsters. In a list with tons of vehicle they also compete in soaking the anti tank which can let your ravagers live a bit longer. Always back them with an haemonculus in order to boost their toughness but since drukhari HQs are lackluster anyway, you won't have a problem including one of them.

I wanted to try 2x3 talos with a single haemy to boost them because I love my monsters and I'd like to field them all but I actually never tried a list with more than 3 talos.

Competitive lists don't include talos, since drukhari have many units that are more effective, but in casual semi-competitive games they can work. Cronos are completely useless though.

I always run 2 with a Haemonculus. I need to get a Cronos myself for the group, but I find they do great as is. Don't bother with upgrades, the default versions are terrific and do wonders.

A third talos is better than a cronos, which is also an additional heavy support choice that you may want to spare for something else, like ravagers. I agree about the loadout, keep them as cheap as possible.

I've tried a talos once and it felt ~30% overpriced. All it did was tarpit a bunch of marines without even killing much at all.

They are overprices and so are the guns..... the melee/shooting options is what is really badly priced.
