Can a model such as a berzerkers armed with a chainsword and chainaxe use grenades as they have no shooting weapons? I would assume not as you use grenades instead of normal shooting or pistols, but I've been told otherwise.

If you have grenades you can use them, usually only one model per unit may throw a Grenade though as per the Grenade weapon type rule.

Heck, a Space Marine with two Lightning Claws and no spare hands can throw a grenade... go figure! :-)

It doesn't matter if you have other weapons or not. Grenade is just a weapon type.

In addition there are multiple instances where you can do something "instead" of another action even if you can't do that action. Smoke Launchers is the best example, you can use them even when advancing.
