If you want to buy in bulk i found aquarium sand to be really good value. I still have a couple of kilos left.

Sandblasting sand comes in a lot of different grain sizes, for desert sand look for stuff called fused alumina, grit depends on what you looking for.check out places that do sandblasting on glass, should get some for free. A cup load goes a long way.

I haven't used that particular one - but I doubt it's too fine, it more depends what you want. As Kingpin mentions, and to expand a bit, sand comes in different sizes. Really you want a variety unless you want a really flat look.
I usually use about three different sizes. You can get a lot of cheap sands out there from alternative places (playground sand for one thing). If you get some from your local beach (assuming that's legal), be very sure to dry it in an oven overnight to kill anything living (I don't recall temperature sorry).

IMO sand can never be too fine. For 28mm minis fine sand actually look more appropriate than bigger grain sizes.
I even use baking soda for some application.

Either go to a playground or go to a hardware store. "Hobby sand" is likely the biggest rip off in our little hobby.
I filled a mason large jar one weekend we took the kids to the park and it will last years.
