Subject: Space Wolves : should I bother

Tough-as-Nails Ork Boy

Here's the thing. I'm toying with the idea to start an army of my teenage first love : the Space Wolves.
If I'm quite not happy of what they've become, but I can get past most of it.
But there is 2 abominations I can't get past to :
- Wulfen for fluff and aestetic reasons
- Thunderwolves : I understand some love them, but for myself I find them ugly and stupid.
So I just don't want to play them, I've even started to build a fluff aroud that, but I recon they are two strong units.
Should I bother play SPace Wolves anyway or is it just a waste of time ?

They're pretty solid. If you want melee and want to stick to Imperium, they're the best melee imperium in the game. but otherwise? Not much reason to take them, especially if you dont like Wulfen and Thunderwolves.

Wulfen and TWC were superstars in 7th edition, now they're just good units but the most competitve SW lists probably don't even have them.
You can play SW without them, here's the best units we have, without considering the two ones mentioned before or characters with thunderwolf mount.
HQs:
Bjorn
Wolf Lord/Battle leader/Rune Priest/Wolf Priest on bike or jump packs or even on foot
Arjac
Njal (maybe)
Troops:
Blood Claws
Grey Hunters
Elites:
Wolf Scouts
Wolf Guard Terminators
Dreads
Wolf Guards on bike, jump packs or footslogging
Heavy Support
Long fangs, especially with lascannons and missile launchers
Land Raider Crusaders
Transports and Flyers:
Stormwolf
Rhinos
Razorbacks
You can have lots of different lists without fielding TWC and wulfen, while still enjoying playing a space wolves army.

I suppose Space Wolves can make a gun castle with re-roll characters, assault cannon razorbacks, long fangs, etc.. (personally I found the 5th Edition Las-Plas-Long-Fang-Spam Codex horribly unfluffy. That abomination made Wolves play more like Imperial Guard than Space Wolves).
Vanilla Marines or Azreal (or AdMech) just do it better.
Similarly, Space Wolves flyers are good, but not quite competing with Storm Raven spam. They are (IMO) better in supporting a more diverse list.
So maybe you wanna wait for the Codex to see if it brings something unique to these builds in a Space Wolves flavour.
Wulfen and TWC, at the moment, offer options that are unique to Space Wolves, playstyle wise (including things like Wulfen aiding a Wolf Guard/Terminator/Arjac Drop Army (or a TWC army of course) by giving re-rolls to charge or extra attacks). The other variants are playable, but the more-or-less mirror examples in Raven Guard, Dark Angels or Ultramarines colours will be more efficient doing it.
One popular unit, I suppose, are Wolf Guard Bikers. Presumably they'd play somewhat similar to TWC, if a bit more shooty, but also benefiting from Arjac (and Wulfen) in CC.
And another hidden star in the CodexIndex is the humble Cyberwolf. 15 pts. and a full FA slot. 3 of them for 45 for a near-complete Outrider Detachment and 3 units you can place into reserves. They are also easy to hide.

Yeah you should join us as a wolf brother you can easily make a lethal melee force without the units you dislike, really we have very few weak choices.
We just lack stratagems and relics atm.

Thank you very much for your input. I will certainly wait for the codex for things to get serious but I may start some modelling based on primaris to get me some truescale SW.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do. |
