So, as the FW index references Baneblades Leman Russ, etc., do I as a R&H player need to buy the AM codex for such things as getting Grinding Advance?

TECHNICALLY yes, but eventually FW is bound to make some actual "codcies" (or "imperial armour" style books) and there will be a complete stand-alone version of RnH
Who knows when that'll happen though.
can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.
They updated Index: FoAM fast enough with the new rules from C:AM, but I think the general consensus is that they seem to be quite swamped with work already, not even accounting for Alan Bligh's sad passing. But we just need to look to Fires of Cyraxus to see that a larger update to their 40k rules anytime soon is quite unlikely.
