I have a simple theory for you all. It goes like this:
Eventually Games Workshop will replace the Rhino. Over time, Warhammer 40k's steady style and scale shifts will push the Rhino out of vogue and it will need to be either updated or replaced.
There's a conundrum, however. The Rhino is so... ubiquitous! It's everywhere! Space Marines of every flavor, even the Chaos kind, use the Rhino. A dozen other Imperial factions use the Rhino, and the Rhino chassis is the basis for the Stalker, Hunter, Predator, Vindicator, and Whirlwind, as well as the rare Primaris Rhino.
Replacing the Rhino Chassis means potentially phasing out all of these other varieties of tank. It may not happen overnight, with the other varieties of Rhino Chassis available while whatever replaces it acts as the new universal transport.
And, let's keep in mind, that this probably won't happen for a long, long time. They could also simply update the kit with better detail and more efficient use of plastic but keep the form factors and shapes roughly the same so that it continues to fit with the other tanks that require its chassis.
What do you guys think? What will GW do when it comes time to put the ol' Rhino out to pasture?

Have you ever seen what the old Rhinos looked like? It was literally a smaller, stouter rhino, completely different in scale, but a similar look.
If they do anything, they'll do what they've been doing for the better part of two decades: make it all bigger.

Theres scale creep
They'll just keep scaling new miniatures up
This does three things
1) Makes 3rd party smaller miniatures look worse by comparison
2) Makes people want to buy new miniatures even though it's essentially the same as their old
3) Allows 'justification' for huge price increases of the kits, even though the cost of raw materials barely went up by pennies
Primaris Marines are the beginning, I think the deathguard are quite a size bigger too

Yeah I don't think GW have ever had an issue keeping the original style of vehicles and models they replace, even when they radically update the look.
Of all the new model ranges I've seen released (since 3rd edition), the current Tyranids range of monstrous creatures have been the only thing which truly made the things they were replacing look outdated. Compare the new and old Hive tyrant models for example.
Can anyone think of anything else?

Chaos models. There's a distinct difference between each generation of Daemons and CSM have evolved from Spiky Marines to Fleshy Baroque Marines. Daemon Engines have also gotten sleeker, less like vehicles with bound daemons and more like biomechanical monsters (compare the defiler with any of the new daemon engines).

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.
When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do. |
