Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

It's that time again! 2 days to vote for the next topic.

- Hostile Environments: Catachan. the Realm of Fire. Australia. Some places are just out to get you! Your model should be properly kitted out for surviving harsh terrain and rough conditions, and/or based in a way that suggests such places.

Behind Enemy Lines: From a covert squad on a mission vital to the war effort to a squad stranded behind enemy forces, your entry should represent troops that are operating far from the front lines of the war.

A Few Good Men:Inspired by (but not limited to) the releases of Shadespire and Necromunda, your entry must be at least 3 models, and can be any sort of gang or warband, from brave adventurers to devious criminal scum via raiding marauders or a band of vigilantes.

Hold The Line: Every army needs a strong, reliable force at its core to hold ground and win the day. From shield-bearing Dwarves to a Necron phalanx, Keen-eyed Elven archers to a mob of Ork 'Ard Boys, these are the troops that win battles time after time through sheer tenacity and force of will.

I've been wanting to paint my cultists for a while and they fit the a few good men theme nicely.

Voted Hold the line, but only because it would be an excuse to get some necron warriors painted.

I might have to scrape up something odd if hostile environments wins, but should be good for the rest. Voted for Hold the Line. Always need some motivation to get more troops painted up.

So, I'm wondering if a Primaris Repulsor would fit any of the categories? Probably not.

Anyway, I voted for Hostile Environment, but I could scrape something together for any of them most likely:
Hostile Environment: I think Plague Marines look like they could survive a hostile environment with their bulky-looking armor and breathing tubes, plus these guys can bring their own hostile environment with them courtesy of Grandfather Nurgle.
Behind Enemy Lines: This might be the push I'd need to paint up some Space Marine Scouts, either the Lost Patrol ones for my Blood Ravens or my other ones for my Dark Angels.
A Few Good Men: This one would be tricky for me. I'd probably have to go with some Chaos Cultists, which would be painted in Alpha Legion colors, or rather colors that would look good with Alpha Legion.
Hold The Line: I've got so much for this one. So many unpainted basic troops. I'd probably do some Plague Marines for this one just because they are the core of a Death Guard army.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I went with Hostile Environments for two reasons.

Main one, I love terrain and I know this is more about minis but I can see a ton of ideas with terrain as well here.
And the other reason - my son got his DE Start Collecting box in and I'ma make sure he joins us =D =D =D (cuz he already has ideas on how he wants to base/paint his DE and nothing says "hostile environment" like a dark ebil hostile army ^_^)

(also @Paradox, good God man can we finish October first?! lol this year/month has just been flying by >< I'm so not ready for November already)

Vote behind enemy lines people, i have scouts that are sitting all sad and grey in my 'ongoing' box. If you text "Behind Enemy Lines" to 0800 544 SCOUT, you can donate just £3 to help give Creed the motivation to paint poor scouts in need of love and attention.

And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

Oooh boy, I don't really have that many miniatures for these challenges, but voted for "Behind Enemy Lines". This can be the excuse I needed to paint sexy ninjas!

Well, looks like 'hold the line' is in the lead... And I do have a full army of Grey Knights to paint, including a couple of squads of Terminators, they certainly hold the fine line that separates the galaxy from demonic invasion...

Is this still limited to 5 models. As holding the line require a few more than five.

Good point, Hold the Line has won and as many people will, I imagine, be using it as motivation to get some troops done, the model limit will be lifted for next month.

I mean, if you're mad enough and want to, go for it!

The easiest thing is just to lift the limit so people can do whatever they want. If I raise it to 10, someone will want to enter a unit of 12 models. If I go to 12, someone will want 15, so on and so forth.

I have a query... I'm getting back to hobby work after a bad stint personally that prevented me being able to recently. I don't really have any time to paint a big unit of troops, but I was wondering if I could paint a larger format model?

There's a specific figure and scenic background set that I'd like to do and I think it fits the 'Hold the Line' theme pretty well. But it isn't a block of troops. Would that be ok? I can link the model if you'd like.

So long as it fits the theme, absolutely. While the limit is lifted from this, that doesn't mean you have to paint a whole squad or regiment. A single Tactical Marine can sell the theme as well as a whole squad, especially if he's framed right ect.

So yeah, so long as he fits the theme, go for it!

I need Dakka's opinion: As I'm really not interested in painting troops for more armies (I'm only missing my Megaboss before fulfilling a promise and being able to buy my Mawkrusha), what do you think about painting Board game "Troops"? Talking about these guys :

Spoiler:

Do you feel it fits the theme?

Looks fine to me. Shieldsmen in particular do a good job conveying “hold the line”

I think the important thing to consider is that the themes of the month are supposed to be an inspiration, not a straitjacket. If you think it works, it’s probably fine.

YMMV, IMHO etc...

Only thing I could come up with is some basic Chaos marines...so if we go that route I'll probably throw in on it.

I have a lot of SM HQ lying around either unassembled, grey or with one coat of paint, and someone has to order the troops and yell 'hold the line'...

Looks like I will indeed be going with Plague Marines for this one, as nothing holds the line better than a bunch of Space Marines that are, through the "blessings" of Nurgle, far more resilient (some might say Disgustingly Resilient ) and intimidating than the corpse-worshipping loyalists.

I think I should get into this painting challenge to give me motivation to paint more.

So quick question... could a line of Blood Bowl Orc Linemen and Black Orcs count as "Hold the Line"? I mean, they ARE holding a line (I need to paint them anyway)

As long as you interpret that way it qualifies. In fact, you gave me the idea to do the exact same thing, only with a human!
