I'm looking into getting back into 40k (my wee brother is still painting models occasionally) and I've realized that painting Tau is kinda boring. Maybe I'm just not very creative. Whatever.

I'm not huge on Chaos in general, but I love Night Lords and really like Khorne.

What units are good nowadays? I've not read 8th ed rules (but should soon), and I'd rather be painting models sooner than later. Does NL mesh well with Khorne daemons? What models along those lines do y'all love to paint?

If you like Khorne, you're in luck! Khorne Bezerkers are fairly top tier in Chaos at the moment. Obliterators are also very nasty. In general though, Night Lords + Khorne COULD work, but it's not the best combination. The leadership debuffs are neat, but I would not use Raptors with it. Even though Raptors stack with it, Warp Talons are just so much better.

And on a last note, don't worry about legion traits and all that when mixing Khorne with CSM. You'll be picking up CSM units to balance out the basic roles your Daemons cant fill, so for the most part your CSM will be all ranged combatents.

Halloween theme army?

A bit of khorne in a night lord army should work tough. Might take a few tries to get good visibility with dark reds and blues tough.

Hush you, he said Night lords, not Alpha Legion

In all seriousness, Khorne Berserkers (the unit) are very strong right now, essentially having twice the amount of attacks on their profile and being able to largely YOLO across the board without much fear for casualties due to their cost. Khorne Daemons, on the other hand, not quite as strong (although not weak either). Also this edition removed Assault Vehicles, so the humble rhino can deliver your berserkers into the fray again, as well as act as mobile walls to block them off from being shot (which is important since this edition anyone can back out of combat). I also like the bloodthirster, but this edition is filled with weapons that shave off multiple wounds easily, so use him in a supportive role rather than as a front line shocktrooper (this may change with the codex).

Also Night Lords are known to use Raptors and Warp Talons. Warp Talons are da gak right now (this is good) so go to town on them. If you want a budget (in points terms at least) alternative, Possessed can be a good alternative as well. For troops, Cultists. Accept no substitutes.

Id put Warp Talons over possessed in that situation anyways. With their ridiculously fast movement and high -AP, they can zoom up by turn 2 and melt any heavies they got. But dont bother deep striking them, its not worth trying to roll a high charge, even with ignoring overwatch. Its actually safer to just abuse flying and cover to tuck them somewhere safe as they advance.

Two rounds of assault followed by moral checks at -3 makes me pucker up just thinking about it.

I run this list, it's pretty brutal. Not a lot of heavy weapons in my list for anti-tank, but Chaos Spawn and Cultist spam can lock down vehicles or tar pit other units pretty well.

My biggest problem was conscripts + commissar since pre codex/FAQ they could just fall back and shoot me to death, and the single model removal took out my major advantage for dealing with hordes (morale removal), but now those days are behind us and everything's looking dark and broody again.

But yes, Zerks to punch, Raptors to drop in, and with the right combo of Spawn, Raptors, a Nurgle banner, and Warlord trait, my opponents get ripped up by the maniacs, then take morale at a potential -6 on 2D6, take the highest result. With that kind of modifier, all you need is one casualty to start the ball rolling.

For the CSM portion, daemons, or both?

So, how important is the psychic phase these days?

I'd had a thought about getting a Thousand Sons sorcerer (or some other Legion that's not NL) and putting some brass chains on him and using him to summon daemons/counter magic (I've heard that's a thing now). Normally, Khorne fething hates sorcerers, but is pretty cool with enslaving them to make magic weapons and the like. I could totally see Night Lords shanghai-ing someone else's sorcerer.

CSM section. For daemons, for the time being, Brimstone horrors fulfill the troop tax better unless you specifically want one of the lesser daemons.

I was talking about the absolute best troop choice Chaos has access to. However Night Lords are stated to enslave Daemons to be used as terror weapons (3.5 edition codex) so it's not out of the question they can nab a few brimstones.
