Are many of the models on ebay replicas? Is that a bad thing?

Also, if they are, are the qualaties of them bad? I am in particular thinking of carnifex parts and kits.

I see lots of stuff from the "Russian Federation". I'm quite leery of buying from such sources. If you get screwed you're at their mercy.

I've bought a lot of stuff on ebay. If it was not original models, I couldn't ever tell the difference.

Of the known recasts I've seen (mostly of FW stuff), it was generally pretty indistinguishable from the FW stuff, except for clearly being a different resin. Most of them had fewer imperfections than I see in FW stuff even.

I wouldn't encourage looking for recasters, because it's time-consuming and tedious and, at least from the couple sites I've seen, not THAT much cheaper in the long run, but I wouldn't be scared of buying anything on ebay for fear it might be recast. I'd be more afraid of the paintjob being harder to strip or the packaging being damaged.

If its russia or china a good chance that its fake

use your better judgement if its cheaper than MSRP its probably fake.

New anyway. If you're buying painted or assembled miniatures at MSRP then let me know what you want, because I will gladly sell you some, free shipping even.

If it is on Ebay, for cheap, and is from China or Russia it is more then likely a recast.

That said, who cares?

Recasts are like Fight Cub. No one talks about it, but more people do it then you realize.

Almost all recasts are in resin as well. If you are buying a resin model that was only released in plastic or metal, it's a recast. If you are buying resin models from China, they are recasts, period.

I would care, I don't condone stealing others' work, especially not for profit.

You said the magic word!

A: "It's not stealing."
B: "Yes it is."
A: "No it isn't"
B: "So-and-so have called it stealing."
A: "Then why doesn't anyone get prosecuted for theft."
C: "Different countries have different definitions of what constitutes copyright violation, if such a thing exists, because... (continues for pages)"
(this part basically loops forever)

B: (Sweeping value judgements)
A: (Envenomed retorts)
}

There. Now I've saved everyone their weekend, and maybe we can just not lock the thread because it derailed for 12 pages over sophistic arguments pertaining to toy army men.

Sorry. Didn't mean anything personally. That's just queued the trainwreck I think every single time I've seen this thread come up before. I was hoping maybe I could get it out of the way early and avoid the trainwreck of the conversation that follows.

And I am a bit grumpy. Again, wasn't trying to be personal.

I'm still pretty new here, I hadn't seen a discussion on this topic on Dakka before so I didn't know it was common or generated that amount of drama. I just meant to say why I wouldn't want to buy recasts.

No offence taken, I get that 12 page drama is... not something to aim for.

With that said, I'll walk away.

Make sure the seller is under a trusted seller. you probably won’t be scamed on parts.

Never had a problem with 'recasts', but don't buy minis from China/Russia, so cannot comment on that.

If you're worried about legality, keep a record of asking the seller 'is this original GW product?'

If worried about quality, check the returns policy.

It's worth noting that regardless of any ethical implications, resin recasts are typically of a very decent quality and most sellers fulfill their orders in a timely manner, even the ones from China.

Like others have said, if it's from Russia or china, and is a great deal, it's probably recast. I bought some grot tanks once from ebay that had the FW pics, but what I got was recasts.

The recasts were good quality and cheaper than FW, so I didn't make a fuss. But just something to bear in mind.

Just remember every time you buy a Russian or Chinese recast a mobster forces another woman into being a sex slave. And you don't want that on your head now do you.

I've bought RT terminators, librarians from the Genestealer SH expansion, a Furioso Dreadnought, Blood Bowl minis, and a Maleceptor on eBay, and every thing I've bought is real GW stuff. I generally only buy from US or UK buyers, and have not had any problems.

@daedalus.

Heard of the Berne Convention mate?

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

I own an actual forgeworld flying hive tyrant unbuilt and unpainted I got off ebay awhile ago.

Recently some Ebay seller has had a bunch of FW Hive Tyrants up for sale and I picked one of those up cause the price was decent.

The color of the resin was JUST BARELY a different grey but honestly I cannot find a second mold line at all and it's that very plastic feeling resin like FWs good stuff. These are perfect casts if a recast.

I have to imagine they are recasts because it didn't come in the FW bag or with the instructions and I doubt some some guy has been sitting on a huge cache of these models for a few years now and just decided to start selling them for cheap.

But I have also never heard of a recast being so damn flawless before either.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Some of the recasts come in fewer pieces than the original model. They sometimes partially assemble things before casting them.

Really thin bits, like hand holds on top of Imperial knights, or the hinges for Chimera doors become very flimsy is resin, as do little spikes on some Tyranid and Dark Eldar models.

Warping during shipping is very common, but can usually be reapaired in a bath of hot water

My mate got the custodes fw character for £20 for a recast it was excellent quality there was one tiny bubble in a spot you'd never see.

Being a recast does not mean it'll be a bad copy.
