Subject: Magnetizing flyer bases?

Anyone have any idea on how to magnetize flyer bases?
The bases just make the models too big to be able to transport easily, so if there is a way to magnetize a flyer base and still have it be strong/ secure enough to stay on, Id appreciate the knowledge.
Thanks!

Do you mean magnetising the clear flight stand to the actual base, or just the flyer to the flight stand? Because most flyers stay just fine on the flight stand without aid, if the stand is just glued to the base.

I mean the flight stand to the flyer.
The problem I have is that I run DE, and raiders, jetbikes, etc all use the flight stands with the spherical insert. Ergo, I cant just stick it in and have it hold on the tabletop.

Ah, you mean the small stands, not the big flyer stands.
I filed the top of those flat and glued a magnet on top. Then used some greenstuff to help secure a magnet on the bike.
I havn’t found a decent way to get them in my grav tanks, but those were mostly built before I considered magnetizing. The big problem with them is a lot of torque. I’ve seen people make a little plus shaped mount that they glue firmly to the stick, and corresponding 4 magnets in the bottom of the tank.
For my vypers I double stacked magnets in the hull because there was space, and they needed a little extra grip to keep things firm.

Ooh. I was thinking about flight stands such as those for Voidravens and Razorwing Jetfighters, not the smaller "hover bases".
Those are a pain, especially the ball-tipped ones. They work okay for jetbikes, but Raiders and Ravagers and too heavy for them to hold up properly without glue. The type with a peg at the tip (such as for the edlar grav tanks) is better for larger models.
There's a reason Dark Eldar are considered one of the worst armies to transport.
Replacing the ball joint with something that holds the weight properly is my advice. Maybe get some peg style bases and drill a corresponing hole to stick it in?

The other option I can see is to use two bases for double stability. Mainly my problem is with raiders right now, while jetbikes will be a problem for future me.

One thing I considered for my falcons is getting some nuts and bolts from the hardware store. Forget the transparent circles, get the larger oval bases and secure the bolt to that. Glue the nut to the bottom of the tank. If starting from scratch I could widen the hole and mount it inside. Then I’d just need to screw the tank to the base when I took it out of the case. Plenty secure and detachable. Not sure how applicable that would be to DE. You might be able to find (or make) clear plastic rods with threads on them if you want to keep the hover look.
I love magnets, but they can’t do everything. I did try some stronger ones, but they ended up just snapping off the model. They were stronger then the glue.

I use Secret Weapon miniatures flight stand widgets for my fliers.
No balls, no cross shaped sockets requiring proprietary stands.
Just a little resin widget with a 1/2" hole in it, and a 1/2" acrylic rod for the stand (which has been drilled and tapped at the other end so it can be screwed onto a base.
The widget is even designed to look like a supplementary air intake-y bit, too.

All too complicated IMO!!!
Trim off the little peg so you're left with a flat-topped cone.
Use a round file or similar to make to hole in the model a bit bigger than the top of the cone.
Push-fit the model onto the cone WITHOUT glue.
Friction & gravity will hold it in place while you game, then just pull it apart afterwards. Works for Falcons without a problem.
Note that I use standard-type bases for continuity not the clear ones they come with, like this:

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

I haven't got any of the ball top hover bases magnetised, but using a small metal rod instead of the stand and gluing a magnet to the bottom of the model should work. You can get them super cheap (<£1) from ebay stores.

The spherical ones are a pain.
An option might be to drill in a bit into the base and have the whole stand slot in like a pin.
otherwise you could build up the connection with green stuff or a random eldar bit that is a bit more thicc to make a better spot for a nice sized magnet. and do the same on the flight stand.

A guy in our group has done this. He drilled a hole for each plastic 'flange' and put a magnet on both stand and base. Added additional magnets to the top for the model and the whole thing breaks into three easy to store parts.
