Hi

I have two shooty armies, and was planning to start an Assault army. What good options do you guys think are there and why?

PS: Don't like the Wolves for fluff reasons

Looking at the newly teased hive fleet abilities, I don't think you can go far wrong with the Tyranid forces for an assault focused army.

Tyranids, Orks and Chaos are probably the most melee oriented factions. Nids and Chaos has the advantage of already released codices. You might also consider Harlequins or Space Wolves, although I don't know much about how they play.

Alpha Legion Khorne Berzerkers are currently the highest-performing assault unit in the game, though Tyranids might overtake them depending on how the codex plays out.

Note however that Berzerkers work best as part of a mixed army of assault and shooting, if you really want something that just bulldozes the enemy with tons of charges then orks or tyranids will suit your desires better.

I'd go chaos or nids. An argument could also be made for eldar, but in terms of sheer % of points in your army you can realistically get into combat quickly, i'd say chaos.

The problem with most assault armies is two fold:

1. Deliever how quickly can you get what % of your army into combat. Eldar and nids have this issue. Eldar the most expensive thing you can get into a reliable turn one charge is a 9 man shining spear squad at 281pts. They can get another unit in via saim-hann advance and charge, or Biel-tans deep strike and +2/3" charge range. While can get some expensive stuff in like give a flying hive tyrants with catalyst, or genestealers with swarm lord. However, many melee focus nid list try to clog the enemies guns with gaunts and or gargoyles doing a turn one charge, to make way for the real wave to come on turn 2.

2. Thier is limit space in melee. Nids suffer from this the most. only 1 maybe two units can realisticly team up on an enemy unit. Shooting+assault works well because you can shoot, and not take up space for your assault units. Eldar don't struggle from this so much.

For this reason i put chaos on top. They ahve plenty of delivery methods for thier models. While also being very elite so so they don't take up a lot of space in melee. So you can charge a 400+pt unit into combat and kit them out with buffs. While also delivering multiple turn one charges.

Either way as i'm sure you know already having two armies. you can't not having a sizable shooting force.

I'd wait a few months, only chaos has a codex among those armies. Orks and tyranids are amazing armies to collect but quite expensive, consider that when chosing the faction. But chaos can be too similar to imperium armies, and if you already have 1-2 of them I suggest to start something very different.

Khorne Berserkers are the first and last word in assault. They hit 8x as hard as a Tactical Marine for 3 more points.

Behemot, kraken or hydra might prove good. But some of the rules has been wrong so far, so wait until the codex drop.

Harlequins are very assault too, but with the Codex out, Khorne it a bit better.

For Hordes, Nids or Orks

Pick the flavor you want, there are a few good options for you.
