Leman russes are really good now, and 7 did great in a 2000 point tournament last weekend. I can only imagine that 5 in a 1000 point should be even better.
A couple of notes (maybe this is my meta, maybe it isnt). Catachan rerolls don’t make a huge difference. Cadian reroll 1s is GOOD, but the tanks can’t move to get the most dakka. This means the tanks are likely to get stuck on LOS, or in melee. The plan now is going to be to use tallarn regiment tactics and keep the tanks on the move with no BS penalty.
Plasma sponsons are TERRIBLE for the points. Heavy bolters seem to do about the same damage, and are reliable unlike D3 shots.
Let me know why you think, remember everything in this list has OPSEC.
Old list had an infantry screen, but in my trial runs having two tank commanders pushing 5", then moving another 6" (tallarn order) and still shooting 40 shots is explosively good.
Keeping starting BS is very strong now that there are even more -1 to hit units floating around in the game. Every +1 to hit is major. In 2000 point games, I plan on all of my tanks being tallarn tank commanders solely to keep on the move and shooting twice and full BS.
The Old Grudges warlord trait is extremely powerful... (Reroll failed wounds on target in 6" of warlord)
I played a 1000pt game against Death Guard. It ended after killing mortarion turn 2. Infantry screened, tanks unloaded.
Rolling bad, he still succumbed to the volume of fire.
Lost 2 tanks and a squad in the exchage, taking out Morty and 2 laser dreds.

Do you have a write up for your 2000pt army? I'm just getting into this army, and I'd like to see what can be done with a lot of tanks, and maybe a few units to hold elevated objectives, or disrupt the enemies side of the board.

Typically in competitive ITC games the objectives MUST be on the ground level. Meaning elevation should be no issue.
In the event that I cannot get to an objective, I suppose that I am in trouble.
My focus would have to be protecting those infantry squads. As my enemy would have the objective of killing them.
So I want to start collecting models based on a specific list, rather than "Oh this looks cool". $$ vs
I'd like to use big guns! Tanks, Basilisk(s), Shadowsword, and heavy weapon teams.
With that said, I know there are things that work, and don't work in the game. I'm looking for a list that is very sit back and shoot, and let the tanks do the moving around.

With the speed the game goes in 8th, that’s gonna be hard. Things that sit back usually get killed by fliers or charged by deep strikers. You have to have screens around said units, and ways to cope when that screen fails. Tyranids can drop a mawlock and 20 devilgaunts (assault 3) for example. That’s going to wreck a screen of say 30 conscripts. They may hold off for that turn, but the following turn that unit is exposed when they run off the table.
My suggestion is to watch some games at a local shop or play on roll20 to get an idea of what works and what doesn’t. This 1000 point list is doing well on 20, and has won 1/1 game in person so far.
That being said, what works in my meta might not in yours. Don’t go all in, build a collection based on why you need based off of experience.
I am leaving that option open. So what I can do is put the punishers (which I have already) in a squadron so they count as one. Unfortunately, since the FAQ you can only have one option be a VEHICLE keyword. That means I would probably be taking an infantry squad and my warlord.
It costs 3CP, which would pretty much eat up all of my (4) CPs that I have available.
I could take the warlord trait that lets me reroll spent CPs, but I always end up regretting that. Rerolling wounds in a 6" bubble (at one unit only) is MUCH more versatile.

The tanks are all going to be spread out, meaning I only lose shooting on one tank at a time (usually).
That's a weakness of the list, and I have to accept that. I could drop a tank and toss in 90 conscripts. But the reality is they usually end up being easy victory points.
