Subject: Dreadnoughts: Want to use Contemptors as both Contemptors and regular venerables

I’ve been out of the hobby for awhile and just realized all of these plastic 30k style models are now available including the sweet looking Contemptor Dreadnought.
I like that model so much I want to use it for both a Contemptor and a Venerable Dread in a dread heavy army.
What would be a good way of distinguishing the models so that my opponent knows which is which? I mean they’ll have different weapon load outs but that doesn’t seem like enough, regular Venerables and Contemptors have different base stats in the SM codex...

Do you actually have one of the plastic Contemptors? Fair warning...it's a garbage, cheap kit with zero options and looks daft compared to the real FW models.
That being said - just toss on different arms or weapons.

Well you can use a contemptor as a contemptor.
are you asking if its ok to use a contemptor as a a venerable?
also the plastic kit is kinda in a meh pose.
nothing a bit cutting and repositioning cant fix.
but it certainly does not come with nearlly as many cool options as the FW index.

One is coming in the mail. I know the limited options it has (two gun choices on right, only one fist for the left). Got it for cheap: It was far, far cheaper than any FW dread. Automatically Appended Next Post: Desubot wrote:Well you can use a contemptor as a contemptor.

Yeah. I want to have both contemptors *and* venerable dreads in my army but only use contemptor models.

Well a contemptor is pretty different from a venerable. but as long as the weapons are proper, and the model looks different i dont think it will be a big deal for 90% of the players
that you should check with your own local group.
just bling it out and make it look like a relic as all venerated dreads should. and as a bonus you could run it as a relic contemptor if you feel like.

Yeah bling might be the simple answer. Maybe some sort of little emblem or other fiddly bit sticking out from the top to make it stand out.
And I guess a more elaborate paint scheme too, maybe different trim color to make it look special.

Are you playing as an established Chapter or "a one size fits all tactics" custom colour scheme? If it's a known chapter, stick some extra being on it from an upgrade sprue or army specific kit. Not exactly the same but I'm thinking of using some of the spare arms from the Blood Angels dread on my Vedros one as one of the variants I don't choose to build the core kit as, and already have a bunch of icons from the BA Assault Terminators box on standby to shiny up the chassis

Was thinking Iron Hands so dreads would be tougher and so that I can build some infantry models with bionics which I haven’t done before. I know IH doesn’t have the best CT but for dreads, especially ven dreads it is nice.

I think you could pretty easily whip up a convincing Venerable Dreadnought by adding some boxy, flat armor panels to the Contemptor's upper torso. They both have the same style pilot/cockpit with the helmeted head sticking out, but the Venerable has that on a more traditional and boxy dreadnought chassis, whereas the Contemptor is much slimmer and more rounded.

Your idea is good, just not for me. I want to use contemptors as venerable because I like their slimmer look.
Hopefully the “bling” will make it look different enough
