I thought it was the Legion that changed it's name and colors to honor Horus after he was named Warmaster?

AaronWilson is a little bit off. He was the Warmaster from the beginning of the
HH novels (Book 1). However, he didn't change the name and colors of his legion until after he was wounded on Davin and made his pact with the forces of Chaos (
HH novel 2). It is the very beginning of novel 3 that they start calling themselves Sons of Horus and change the color of their armor.
Actually AaronWilson is correct in regards to the name timeline, Horus was Warmaster from the begining of book 1, but renames his legion and recolors it a few weeks after the Interex incident in a decree (page 410 of
Horus Rising in my book version), which was a decent while before Davin.
I have only read the novels (Aka Horus Rising, Galaxy in Flames, Flight of Eisenstien, Fulgrim etc) and I've not read the big black books. but R0bcrt has the same understanding as I.
