Started painting a Ork tank conversion, But couldnt decide on how to paint it after i put the primer on. Should I be doing a rather crude coverage, to get that better Orky feel or should i be going for a nice clean paint job and add in flaws later with other paints?

if its looted would start by painting it as whatever it was if you want bits of that to show through, then paint over it focusing on the larger bits that are easy to see but ignoring bits around exhausts etc.

Aim for the look of something painted by someone who didn't want to be doing it.

Alternatively have a look at pictures of WW2 "captured" vehicles, specifically in how they tend to be utterly plastered with icons to make them easy to distinguish.

Sticking clan symbols in bright colours on ever flat surface etc.

Blood Axes can go for camo, but if the paint feathers to whatever it was towards the bottom, on the underside of the front and rear (like the paint has rubbed off).

Evil Suns guessing red stripes and panels over the base colour?

Largely agreeing with the above...

Most of us like ork stuff to retain a ramshackle or patchwork look. That's where you can add a lot of personality and narrative to the model, especially vehicles. You want your build to tell the story of how the orks acquired and orkified the tank.

If you do a complete paint job, my preference is to make the "bottom layer" of cruft a single color, then have the additional layers of patchwork add-ons in some mismatched colors. I use a combination of similar shades ("dis is da closest we got, boss") and completely different bits. You get an impression that the original mek took some care with his work, but inevitably others have mucked it up with shoddy paints.

The other fun route is a partial repaint, where the original colors of the base vehicle are there, but have been painted over only as necessary. So the hull could be the original, heavily weathered colors. Then the bits that the orks bolted on get painted their own colors. And/or glyphs and patterns applied on top of the humie paint.

For Evil Sunz, an interesting pattern I'm picturing would be an "original" paint job in camo or drab or whatever, then with a big, somewhat sloppy "racing stripe" sort of thing running down each side. Add flames, checkers, teef or whatever to taste. They added just enough red to make it fasta.

A neat Blood Axe scheme would be to take a fairly bright parade-ground paint job (like Space Marine primary colors) and then have the orks put garishly colored "camouflage" blobs onto it. Like a red Rhino with yellow/orange camo stripes on it.

this is what the finished-ish product looks like, i still want to add some Ork Graffiti on it and some more plates but this is it now.

Id add some patchy rust to break up the bigger panels

adds a bit more color in browns and oranges.

I'm just wondering if some graffiti might make it stand out a bit more, not too much, but just little things like slogans, an ork skull maybe or clan symbol etc.

Just a thought, i struggle with orks, even though I don't paint or ever have painted them, I always find it hard to imagine what i would want them to look like, I guess that's one of the challenges with orks is precisely that and why they are one of the hardest armies to get to look "right"

Saying that though, to end on a positive note, it's really well painted and I do like the weathering effect on the turret and cannon.

Some brown or black washes in the crevices would break the paneling up nicely.
