I'm starting out with the hobby and decided to go with Blood Angels. So far I have a tactical squad half painted and I was working on a list to decide what to purchase next. Below is what I've thought of so far and some feedback would be appreciated:

Battalion Detachment:
HQs:
-Chief Librarian Mephiston 145 pts
-The Sanguinor 170 pts

Troops:
-Scout squad (all cloaks, 4 snipers, 1 missile launcher) 111 pts
-Tactical squad 10 marines (heavy flamer, meltagun, plasma pistol/power sword) 175 pts
-Tactical squad 10 marines (heavy flamer, meltagun, plasma pistol/power sword) 175 pts

Elites:
-Sanguinary Guard (all angelus boltguns, all death masks, 2 encarmine blades, 2 encarmine axes) 190 pts
-Sanguinary Guard Ancient (angelus boltgun, death mask, encarmine sword) 108 pts

Vanguard Detachment:
HQ:
-Lemartes 129 pts

Elites:
-Death Company 5 marines (jump packs, 2 bolt pistol/chainsword, 1 bolt pistol/power sword, 1 bolt pistol/power axe, 1 thunder hammer) 129 pts
-Death Company 5 marines (jump packs, 2 bolt pistol/chainsword, 1 bolt pistol/power sword, 1 bolt pistol/power axe, 1 thunder hammer) 129 pts
-Death Company Dreadnought (furioso fist pair, heavy flamer, meltagun, smoke launchers) 212 pts

Flyer:
-Stormraven Gunship (hurricane bolters, twin multi-melta, twin lascannon) 326 pts

Total 1999 points and 4 CP

There is usually very little reason to have 10 man tactical squads, you'd be better with 4 x 5 man squads and get rid of the scouts.
I'd personally get rid of the sanguinor and get Lemartes to lead the death company he really takes them up a notch.

This could lead to some points for some razorbacks

I'd also say get rid of the power swords and axes in the death company and go mass hammers.
I run a 5 man squad with 1 hammer and a 5 man squad with a chaplain and blood priest and really tear stuff up.

Sanguinary guard aren't as choppy as you'd hope as they have nowhere near enough attacks for what they cost and you're paying for crazy guns on a squad you want to be in combat.
They tend to get tarpitted really easily especially in smaller squads.

I don't know how fast you are wanting to finish your list or spend more money, but it's less than a month until the BA codex is released. Until then there's not much point buying all the stuff until we see if we get anything viable. So just keep honing your paint skills and set a theme and standard for yourself.

8th edition is mostly a shooty game and unfortunately I'm quite pessimistic on the BA codex release changing that much. For casual and friendly games that isn't much of an issue.

Here's some random thoughts for you, others can add more:

What kinda play style you like, aggressive or passive or mixed?

Competitive marine lists usually have a heavy support section accompanied with a captain and a lieutenant. The there's couple screening units denying deepstrike that enemy can't drop anything dangerous near your heavy section. Then there's some units that grab objectives and try to pick enemy threats via fast movement or deepstrike.

For these elements, that scout squad is fine (dunno about ML on the scouts though). Stormraven is a nice gun platform and only viable mean to transport your cc dread in close combat. From the same kit as the dc dread you can build a librarian dread which for couple times I've used it in the 8th been nice. It's a character so it can't be targeted by the enemy unless it's the closest model visible. Also it can cast 5++ inv. save. Index version of the DC is imho too expensive, so I'd wait the codex and see if inferno pistols get a nice point reduction etc. before I would make tons of them. Boltguns and chainswords are a good combo for your ablative DC models, rapid fire your boltguns before assaulting. Sang priest is also a nice buff for DC, S5 wounds MEQ on 3+.

All your above HQ's have their place, but maybe not take all named HQ's, they cost so much more than regulars, but do what you want

This is getting to a novel lenght so..

Tactical squad with a heavy flamer is fluffy, but the weapon is quite expensive for what it does. plasma, combi-plasma isn't that fluffy, but potentiality to diminish 2 wound models is always nice.

Razorback, stormraven (magnetizing isn't that hard) are good transports.

Scouts have their places, I run 2x 5man with boltguns and a storm bolter for screens and 1x 5man sniper cloak squad, never seem to find points for ML dude).

I'll stop here. Buy minimum amount models, paint stuff before get new ones until you get the codex.

Nice to see new BA players, welcome.

Thanks for the detailed response Xirax. I know the codex is coming out soon and that's why I haven't bought more minis and decided to make a rough list of what I'd like. I like an aggressive play style so what I had in mind with the list i posted was a back line of tactical squads with the sniper scouts supporting them and the sanguinary guard/DC to deepstrike and harass. I'm mostly going to play casual so I don't care that much about min-maxing everything but I also don't want to get curb-stomped every game lol. I hope inferno pistols get a point reduction because they seem really cool but 20 points is a lot.

Hey there--there is some good info on the BA tactics thread about lists and combos. Right now the only "Chapter Tactics" boost goes to the Death Company models, so if you are truly a BA player (which I am) then you kind of have to roll with that. That said, I have been using Primaris Helblasters which are pretty scary, and also some of the Aggressors. The Aggressors are so dakka-heavy that they have died fast in all my games, as my opponents have targeted them immediately to remove the threat, but that in combination with Lemartes-led DC could work well.

The Storm Raven is definitely great, and a recent competitive list (I know you're not looking for that) ran multiples--they can bring a LOT of Dakka to the game and I agree that the game is very shooty right now.

I am hopeful for a boost from the Codex to our Close Combat of some kind, and some sorts of reductions on points, especially on fluffy units like the Sanguinary Guard.

5000 pts High Elves 4000 pts, Warriors of Chaos 4000 pts, Dwarfs 3000 pts, Wood Elves and Greenskins too

As others have said, wait for the codex before settling on anything. That said, until the codex changes stuff I would suggest swapping the angelus Boltguns for plasma pistols as they’re cheaper and hit harder. There’s also the option to overcharge if you really need to hurt terminators and similar hard targets. I would also recommend swapping the axes for more swords. I find that the extra points aren’t worth the extra strength, although ymmv.
