Long story short I started playing in 7th and after buying and selling a few armies these two fit. Flash forward to 8th and I haven't played but two games and I'm trying to decide which to main so to speak because I can't justify spending the money to keep up with rules for both only playing as little as I do.

I like them both equally and have about 3000 points painted in each. Not real happy with the primaris.Them not being able to ride in all the new transports I just bought last edition puts a bad taste in my mouth but I feel ultras are probably the safer bet from edition to edition. But on the other hand I love me some metal skeleton"s

Necrons are apparently really fun to play in 8th, and there are already far too many Ultramarine armies in the world!

If you have any inclination to play competitive (even moderately competitive, not necessarily tournaments) go ultras, necrons are super weak right now in 40k and are unlikely to get a codex until sometime next year (probably late).

If you have any scarabs you should play Necrons. If you have that stupid monolith, then you should definitely play Ultramarines. The advantage of Ultramarines is that you can bring Reroll Girlyman to a casual game without feeling like that guy. The advantage of Necrons is that.... well it's all about those scarabs, baby. One of the best units in the game. So my vote is for the Robot Skeleton Egyptians From Outer Space.

Necrons, we need more xenos. Even robot zombies, work, i guess.

Besides why would anyone support the guy thst died trying to drop a duce claiming it was daemons and is now held up as a religious icon... when he hated religion. Sounds like the heretics are running the show on Terra.

Heck even the space elves took piety on terra sending sailor moon to help them out, giving them girlyman back.

Ultramarines function more as an army and Necrons are bad at the moment on top of the fact we aren't getting a codex for awhile.

Make of that as you will.

Id probably go with the Ultras. Ultras are a good army to play because theyll generally always have support, everyone will always be familiar with their rules, and they always get the new goodies and have a spot in the story/events.

Necrons currently are in a weird spot competitively, and the new range is...abysmal to build and paint, at least to me, so that may be an issue expanding the army. Also "tomb kings in space" just isnt terribly compelling personally.

Not sure if this is troll or not? The One game I have played in 8th with crons I felt like my scarabs did pretty poor and monolith did well. But I could very well be wrong.

Necrons are probably the worst army in the game right now, as much as I would love to recommend them over freaking Ultras. If winning is at all a concern for you then you're gonna have to go with the boys in blue.

I doubt it's Smurf hate so much as a desire to see more diversity of armies being played... not that being Ultramarines helped, mind you.

I sure did. Every other table has Ultras on it. I've yet to play Necrons in 8th. I've only even seen them at a tourney once.
