Hi, everyone!

I got back into 40K with 8th and went all in for Death Guard.

Too much, in fact! I find myself with a pretty dang large stack of extra stuff. So much that I can essentially build a second force to go along with the Death Guard.

I've got around 40 Cultists, 40 marines (Mark III and Mark IV), 10 Terminators, a Daemon Prince, and transports (Rhinos). I've also got enough bits and such to cobble together a few Helbrute customs and even a Heldrake, if I use the dragon bits that came in one of the lots I purchased.

I did get the Chaos codex, with the thought that I should make this into a viable second army to go along with the Death Guard. Ideally, it would stand on its own, as well as help cover the gaps in the Death Guard list. But, which Legion would be best?

I had the thought of going with Iron Warriors or Alpha Legion, but I'm not quite sure. I know that the Death Guard list has some major gaps in terms of heavy and long-range weapons, at least for infantry. I thought either of those might help shore up those deficiencies, as well as being part of a 2nd army. Night Lords could be fun too, for enhanced leadership shenanigans.

I've put a poll up to see what Legion everyone thinks might be best, and I welcome opinions! Thank you for reading.

You can't go wrong with Alpha legion. The ability to redeploy anywhere on the board is fantastic, and -1 to hit never hurt anybody either. Also, you get berzerkers as troops. So, enjoy your super cool battalion made up of elite slots.

Alpha Legion Obliterators are basically always gonna be the answer.

N... no you don't? Only World Eaters get Berzerkers as troops, Alpha Legion has to take them as Elites.

What's the Death Guard part look like? I can't determine what you'd want to supplement with.

How does Alpha Legion get Berserkers as Troops?

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

I've got about the same number of cultists, poxwalkers and plague marines--about 40 of each. I had a LOT of time on my hands this summer to model and paint, and Ebay was good to me. Squad of Blightlords and one of Deathshroud. A few Rhinos, and Predator and Crawler conversions (2 of each). Defiler, a pair of Helbrutes, a Demon Prince, and basic HQs (Lord, Contagion Lord, Malignant Plaguecaster) and the other characters (Tallyman, Putrifier, Surgeon, etc.) that I made from conversions. I have pieces for maybe doing a custom Typhus. No Mortarian yet, I'm still figuring out that one (the real model is awesome, but I can't swing that right now). So I'm pretty well set with Death Guard, happily.

I was thinking I'd use Cultists as the basic troops, actually, so I could do the Chaos Marines as Berzerkers, Noise Marines, and maybe Rubric Marines to get my Smite on. So it probably won't make much difference whether they're troops or elites.

Alpha Legion was my first thought, because of the deployment options. Death Guard moves slowly, obviously. Alpha Legion up front could cause enough trouble to focus an opponent's attention on them long enough for the DG to get into position. Iron Warriors I liked as well, with the ignore cover thing on their ranged attacks.

Same price either way. I was thinking I'd use Cultists as the basic troops, actually, so I could do the Chaos Marines as Berzerkers, Noise Marines, and maybe Rubric Marines to get my Smite on.

Sounds like you WANT to get close. You're gonna have a few separate ways to supplement.
1. You can go into melee even harder. A big distraction of World Eaters Berserker Marines in a Dreadclaw would eat firepower and they might even die. However, they would NEED to die, and then everything else can go forward and get up close relatively unscathed.
2. You can supplement with further shooting. Iron Warriors or Alpha Legion Obliterators would be good here. Emperors Children works too but I like them less.
3. If you want speed, a Renegades Biker Rush list is hard to beat. I personally think it's a sleeper list to do. This also works with Alpha Legion or World Eaters again, but mildly less effective.
