BoxThrone - Modular Board Game Shelving Kickstarter

Bookshelves are made for books, not games. It’s time to upgrade. Take a stand with your own custom, modular board game shelves. The first ever made-for-board-games storage system.
BoxThrone is a modular shelving system that lets you store every game flat. Games slide out with ease, and stand tall in gorgeous, eye-catching displays.

Spoiler:

I am on the fence on this system. So I'm curious what others think and have to say about the system and maybe talk me out of it since I'm on the fence. ^_^

Visually it looks nice, fits changing needs and has some interesting aspects. I am always looking for better ways to store my games since I probably have hundreds at this point and a lot of them are odd medium/large sized games like CMoN that traditionally leave wasted space in any shelf system. Currently, I use Ikea shelves, basically Kallax shelves because they are sturdy, look nice and inexpensive. This BoxThrone's footprint seems like it could ultimately end up bigger than Ikea system which isn't a benefit unless it can fit more games in that space more efficiently. It is definitely a more expensive route which makes me hesitant. But I have the ability to utilize the space better with this system and that doesn't include the upgrades. It can convert to a display case with clear shelves, it can have drawers (might hold miniatures) but once you start adding those things, it can get really expensive.

I am still not sure if the benefits justify the price in my opinion so curious what others think, what options they use, etc.

If you have lots of board games and the cash to spare, sure.

If you have more time than money, then jury-rigging your own might work better.

I have been debating it too. The display shelf option might be the selling point for me but the cost of shipping is pretty high for the USA

Sort of, there are a couple ways to handle them. You can put them in lengthwise and they overhang, they are still stable.

Or you can get a larger shelves to go between two of the shelf units to create a wide storage place for them. Since I have about 10-14 games, which does include a few of the GW boxed games that was probably the route I would go.

At the end of the day, jury-rigging can cost more or the same depending on how much you value your time, how good you are at woodworking and what tools you already have at your disposal. I did look at building from scratch, even having Home Depot do the cutting (since that is free), the materials alone end up 2 times the Ikea system amount. That isn't including time to build it. Ultimately that was why I chose the Ikea shelf units because they were $100 or less. But there is definitely a lot of wasted space but they do look nice. I can only fit 3 medium/big CMoN games in each cube though. Usually two of them are stacked on top of each other, the third is on its side with the art facing out (which is a nice display).

I'm unconvinced the wire shelving is a smart move, it will be fine for light games, or for games with heavy duty boxes,

but a heavy game in a flimsy box is going to be marked by sitting on that sort of thing (not a problem for some, but it will be for the sort of folk who want to sleeve their cards etc)

That is definitely a concern. It doesn't state that they are rubber coated, just a round shape and glossy finish which reduces wear. The frame is a couple different shapes, so pressure on the box is supported and not just at the corners but looks well distributed.

It may also be why they only recommend stacking only a couple games on a shelf together. They really want each shelf to have its own 'medium/big' box game so the weight of the shelf is really only one box. It would be different if you stacked multiple boxes on top of each other, then that on one frame as the whole weight is pressing into the frame. I think for things like CMoN games or miniatures games, it would be fine as long as you only stack one on a shelf. It is the same reason I usually only put 2-3 stacked together in a Kallax Ikea shelf too... because having too many games stacked on each other, moving and removing the ones on the bottom with the ones on top can create wear.

I think this is a cool idea. And wouldn’t the wire shelves be ok if there are clips or something to hold them in place?

I'm really lucky, all the game boxes I have can stack on top of each other on conventional non-specific shelves....like er....normal boxes.

And it's a Kickstarter.

Yep, no thanks.
