So as the title says I'm considering a Necron force (at least if I can shift some unassembled warhammer models that I've never gotten around to building) and I'm curious about learning a bit more about the tide of unstoppable living metal.
From my casual reading around they appear to be in a poor spot right now; which is to say fairly uncompetitive and quite in need of a new codex and thus likely ripe for a big revival next year (expecting it early in the year through to the first quarter based on GW's current speed of codex releases). So I'm well aware that things are likely to change up for them, hopefully for the better.
That said it would be good to hear about some flavour of how they play on the tabletop and how they focus and work; as I'm sure that GW will generally retain their playstyle even if there balance changes.
I also notice that the clear green sticks that became a main feature of many of the warrior models has apparently started to phase out of use; the immortals don't have them any more; the warriors on the Ghost Ark don't appear to have them, although the warrior and destroyer models appear to still have them. Which leads me to the question of if people feel that if those models are coming up for replacement; or indeed if any others are (which is always a hard thing to guess as to when/if GW updates anything).
I'd also be curious in knowing how the Forgeworld models stand up in gameplay, especially the canopek tomb stalker and acanthrites.

DakkaDakka is really the place where you need anti-tank guns to kill basic dudes, because anything less isn't durable enough. |

Aye though I'd imagine that their core choices are going to remain fairly standard. Warriors, Lords, Immortals etc...

Necrons... don't really work right now. Theoretically they're supposed to be hyper-durable MEQ's that kill big stuff with quantity of shots rather than quality but neither Reanimation Protocols nor Gauss works the way they need to for those things to be true. Both are going to need an overhaul for Necrons to function come codex time so it's difficult to say what that will look like.

I know nothing about the Necrons, but If you like their look and feel, you should get them regardless how good they currently are. They will get some new stuff soon in Chapter Approved and a full codex later.
But about those green rods. Personally I think they look kinda goofy and cartoony, and if I were doing Necrons I'd replace them. Immortals come with a big gun with two textured rods, so If you build your Immortals with their alternative weapon or as Deathmarks, you will have two rods per Immortal left. Then you can replace the green rods on the Warriors with those. I have seen some pics of people doing that and it looks pretty cool, not to mention the army will have more unified look.

Crimson I'd been thinking about that yes, glad to hear that the immortal rods do work with the regular warrior guns and yes it would give them a more unified look.

I've never liked the green rods. I cut down the Gauss Flayer so the rods can't be used. Basically everything that would be under the green rod, including the bayonet, is removed. The muzzle piece is then glued to the body, making the Flayer look more like a carbine or sub-machine gun.

If you enjoy their look and fluff as I do go for it. I love the army and hope we get some love soon but if we don’t it’s not like we are unplayable. I have won a few games in my casual meta. But if winning is all that matters to you I would wait for the codex

A very nice conversion, the gun looks like it was meant to be like that all along.
I'd be very surprised if the core of the codex changes. You won't go wrong with any of the new stuff, things like Immortals and Wraiths won't deviate much, but I would echo the thought that you should really wait until the codex is released before investing too much into an army.
A small detachment for kicks that you can build upon later though, go for it!

"Courage and Honour. I hear you murmur these words in the mist, in their wake I hear your hearts beat harder with false conviction seeking to convince yourselves that a brave death has meaning.
There is no courage to be found here my nephews, no honour to be had. Your souls will join the trillion others in the mist shrieking uselessly to eternity, weeping for the empire you could not save.
To the unfaithful, I bring holy plagues ripe with enlightenment. To the devout, I bring the blessing of immortality through the kiss of sacred rot.
And to you, new-born sons of Gulliman, to you flesh crafted puppets of a failing Imperium I bring the holiest gift of all.... Silence."

I play with wraiths and warriors, hold objectives, endure fire. Rumored strategem about res-protocols on canoptecs seems plausible (canoptec harvest theme continuation) so wraiths, scarabs, immortals and warriors are safe bet the rest is so-so.

Aye, though based on how the current new codex are upon release and how well the Tyranid one has improved over the last I suspect that Necrons should improve. It it were their early days when they had 3 or so models it would be more of a risk, but I can't see GW dropping them as they are now.
