So I’m looking at spending about 75$ on valejo paints for my Sons of Malice army. Any advice on which sets are best/necessary? Thanks in advance for any advice!!

If you don't have a local hobby store that stocks them - or a craft store that has a model section - make sure you're getting either model or game colour; unless you are airbrushing then yes you will want the set likely that Fafnir linked.

Most of what I own is model colour, I just went and bought them piecemeal to get the colours I wanted. I did buy a Panzer Aces kit which had some cool colours in it tho - just depends what you want.

I would probably just get a set of basic model colour that included the ones you needed for your scheme.

The air colour set is perfectly fine for hand-brush painting, and in my experience, preferable.

Buy some Vajello Primer while you're at it. They have a great range of colors of primers and various sizes as well. This can save you a lot of time if your primer coat is close in color to your base coat!

His paint scheme for Sons of Malice is black and white.

The HORROR!!!

OTOH, a dark grey primer might do the trick. It's easier to work up to white (than black primer) and easily washed down to black-ish (shaded black).

For your gold trim, let me recommend Vallejo Metal Color Gold. It's the best metallic paint I've ever worked with.
