New AoS player here. Haven't even made a purchase yet but the GW website is extremely annoying with the way the armies are split up. I play 40k and have on and off since 3rd edition. That being said that I am a purist in that i don't like a bunch of different races etc making up my army.

Which armies in the AoS setting can legitamately stand in their own? I'm not a competitive player but I do want an army that can be played with some success even if some tactical genius is required.

Pretty much any of the individual factions are playable, some more so, some less so. I'd advise you to do what I'd tell anyone starting out to just pick a faction you like the fluff/aesthetic/playstyle of and play a few games with it

Your best bet are the new or reworked factions, who got a Battletome since AoS launch.

ORDER
- Stormcast Eternals
- Seraphon
- Fyreslayers
- Sylvaneth
- Kharadron Overlords

CHAOS
- Blades of Khorne
- Disciples of Tzeentch
- Skaven Pestilens (though they might get thrown together with the rest of the Nurgle stuff in January)

DEATH
- FLesh-Eater Courts

DESTRUCTION
- Bonesplitterz
- Beastclaw Raiders
- Ironjawz

I would also add Nighthaunt and gutbusters to these lists, they are working very well for me.

Slaves to Darkness are also easily playable on their own.

2750 Unliving Legion of the Zarith Dynasty
840 Imperial Knights of House Janis
2000 Khorne Bloodbound of the Skullfiend Tribe (Aqshy)
2000 Tzeentch Arcanites of the Cult of Searing Light (Hysh)
3000 Slaves to Darkness of the Legion of Rusted Chains (Allpoints/Azyr)
2500 Sylvaneth of the Seelie Court (Ghyran)
