Hey

I had a few questions about battlescribe as it’s what Iv been using, the most recent file says on it that development has been discontinued. Does that means it’s over being updated?

Also, how do you add fortifications to your rosters?

Cheers

AFAIK, they've only stopped the mobile database development. And it makes sense, as they had both it and the normal database.

I’m using it on iPad at the moment and that’s the only edition of it I can see, there any edition that I can get on iPad with the new updated points cost?

I'd be happy for it to be the end.

I used that in 7th - checked in on it not to long ago and it didn't seem to be being updated very fast. What codex are up to date with it now?

It has all Codex's up to Eldar. I assume Tyranid too but to be honest I don't know the Tyranid point changes from Index to Codex to see if they have changed it. Probably for the end of December they'll have Blood Angels and all the Chapter Approved point changes too.

In theory, Imperial Guard are done.

In practise, whoever did the rules apparently didn't bother to read the Regiment rules in the codex.

In my experience, they make far worse errors without it - that includes me (whose 7E IG lists would have been so horribly wrong).

As others have said, it looks like just the mobile dataset is being discontinued. You should see a "full" 8E version available - this is from my ipad

How long does it take for them to update the rules? I just signed up and it looks like they haven't added CA points yet.

I'll say 1 month, or 1 month and a half, is the normal cicle for uptading with new rules, changes, etc...

Both Eldar and Tyranids Codex have already been added to the database. They lack BA Codex and CA point changes.

The author dicks everyone who bought the 1st edition of battle scribe, and now his SaaS model for the second edition is failing, so he is cutting down on his development obligations. The problem though is that without mobile though BS is pretty much dead in the water, and it's limited income is about to become none. So yeah, time to find a new list building app.

Nothing beats your Codex + calculator. Pen & paper or using Word/Notepad or whatever to record your army list is your preference after that.

But Codex + calculator is ALWAYS up to date and accurate (well, as accurate are you are competent anyway)

The 8th edition data occasionally disappears from the repo. If you check the github page it’s stjll there. The sky is not falling. Just wait a couple of days and it’ll be back up there

But those files are developed independantly. The creator of battlescribe has nothing to do with development of battlescribe files. The author of the mobile file put out that he isnt interested in developing a more mobile friendly format now that the original huys that make 40k files are at it, and have more resources.

In short, he had no development obligations in the first place. He created a 2nd battlescribe because he wanted the interface to create battlescribe files more user freindly.

The mobile format version was never updated properly and confused everyone (and was no better on mobile) so good.

You want the main Warhammer 40,000 catalogue, which is kept up to date.

One month, that is just a load of gak. Multiple armies were updated with CA costs before CA was even released! They used the leaks. YMMV because they have different people doing different armies but IMO FAQ updates and the like have always been available very quickly.

Pen&paper, who has the time? I'll seriously consider retiring from playing 40k if BS gets discontinued and no substitute is available. It's an invaluable tool and the data is pretty much 99% on point. If you're playing a tournament or something you can always double check everything but I have very rarely come across any issues.

Personally, I've used Battlescribe for ease and being able to print out the roster is nice.

BUT (its a big but) I do really enjoy sitting in bed with a note pad, pen, my codex and looking through it all, flicking back and forth putting a list together, getting my calculator out and seeing how much squads cost, dropping a plasma gun here adding a chainfist there.

I was only introduced to battlescribe this year so its kinda fun having lots of lists on there but I won't mind either way about the development of Battlescribe and other list building tools.

Can you print roster without it being ridiculous one unit per one page? Seriously tournament list should not take more than 1 or 2 pages at most. When I went to 30k tournament it gave me 15 pages...Way too much.

CA SM points costs have already been updated. You can always change the points yourself with the data editor, no need to wait.

When you go to print roster check the boxes for no rules and no profiles on the left side. It will be 2-4 pages when you print it.

I find critics about Battlescribe's accuracy to be similar to the ones about Wikipedia's accuracy. Some errors exists, especially on obscure units/topics, but it's correct almost all the time. And I will always trust it more than what some random guy tells me (unless the guy can shows me the book and latest FAQ).
I really dislike pen and paper, especially in 8th edition. The only way to make it work, if you don't remember everything, is to print the point values (and put notes about the updated points from CA), so at least you can have them next to unit entries, and don't have to flick through the book all the time.
But I mostly look at army lists on my phone when I have a few minutes of spare time and don't have my books with me. The sheer convenience of a phone app can't be matched by books for me. It's also a great way to have a good idea of what other armies can bring, when you don't own their books.

Ah well bit better. HTML is still worthless as 5 pages for 2k list is ridiculous(think issue is it tries to fit all heavy support say to same page so if it doesn't fit switch to next page even if 2/3 units would fit and this keeps compounding resulting in lots of white area) but as txt it's at least just 2 pages with no rules etc. Profiles are too hard to read on txt format though. Codex better there.

How sweet it was with army builder back in days when I got list with profiles on 2 pages generally.

The mobile files are deprecated and will not be updated anymore.
The main repository most used is still alive and kickin'.

Just to make this clear:
Battlescribe and the data you use are independent.
You pay for the app. The data does not cost you a single cent. Every data author does this on his free time, unpaid, as a volunteer, to provide you with the service and contribute to the community..
So as far as I am concerned - you can complain all you want, unless you start coming over and actually contribute and do the WORK and put the hours in... well I better stop talking now.

The mobile version was a project of a guy that intended to make it more usable on mobile devices by placing checkboxes, wargear and the like on the uppermost level so you'd not have to dive deep down into your unit to change the loadout.
As you probably can imagine by this point, doing this and updating EVERY catalogue for a single guy was simply too much work.

My usual way to print my list takes a bit of effort, but that's really just a bit:

Army List
-> Go to Print, then Plain Text, then remove almost anything aside from points, unit names and equiped stuff - copy that to excel, remove all empty lines. Print as fit to page, regular orientation

Stat Cheat Sheet
-> Got to Print, normal Print , set everything to Summary at the end, scroll down to the end of the preview and copy the profile summary as well as the equipment summary to excel (next to each other), adjust cell spacings a bit to make e.g. long extra equipment rules fit properly. Print as fit to page, landscape orientation.

And if you're not familiar with the units you can still print the regular list directly from BattleScribe, but that obviously wastes a lot of paper - but is usually still quicker than looking it up in the Codex/Index.

For some reason in my version of battlescribe the plain text option has completely stopped working. It's driving me nuts.
