I'm interested in getting into Bolt Action. It has a decent size following at my FLGS. I've played 40K since 2000 and want to try something new, this is the only other game that interests me. I really only want to build vehicles, though. I thought about starting a US Marines force since I spent 9 years in the Marines, but I decided to a German tank army for 2 reasons. First, I like their tanks and don't feel like painting infantry. Second, most people have Allied armies and I want to be able to play against other people who want to keep it somewhat historic. I have no desire to paint troops (I have hundreds of unpainted 40K models) so I thought sticking with a tank/vehicle army would be the way to go.

So, is it common to have tank only armies? I know that it will make me somewhat uncompetitive, but I'm cool with that. I also wanna field a platoon of Tigers and a King Tiger or possibly a Maus. And get a few lighter vehicles and maybe an aircraft or two. I also don't know how to get into the game. Do I buy the rulebook and the German Army book? Or just the rulebook at first? Thank you.

If you want to play tanks-only, look at Tank War, which is a supplement to Bolt Action.

Base Bolt Action supposedly only supports 1, maaaybe 2 tanks on the board. It is primarily an infantry game.

If you want to go the route of Tank War, I suggest the German Tank War (2nd edition) starter set. It comes with 3 Tigers, 3 Panthers, dice, tokens and the Tank War rulebook. You'll also need the base Bolt Action (2nd edition) rulebook.

(Miniature Market has a great price on the starter set, BTW).

It never ends well

It is not common to have tank/vehicle only armies, even with Tank Wars. You may want to look over the army lists. It is possible to field tank only forces, but frankly you do not see it often. If the folks at your FLGS play Bolt Action, look at what they are using.

Tank only armies do happen in Tank Wars, but as others have said already this is a rare occurrence. BA is built with the Infantry Platoon in mind and lacks the advanced structures needed for Tank on Tank warfare. Additionally most of the missions require you to have Infantry units to capture objectives. There is a Tank War mission that lets your tanks score objectives, but thats the only one there is.
There are rumours that a 2nd edition of Tank Wars is coming out, but until then you should ensure to have some Infantry too.
