I'm planning on buying a 48" x 48" battle mat for playing some 40k home games on.

I'm looking at, and reading reviews of the GW City Ruin mat, or this mat on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XGNJ5MY/ref=twister_B07458BMQ7?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

They both look great, but I prefer the look of the one on Amazon that I linked.

Does anyone have any experience with both of these? The GW mat is of course, much more expensive, but if it's a better quality mat, I'm ok with that. I'm worried that the one on Amazon may be too thin or not as good quality, but since I've never seen either of these in person, I have no idea how they compare quality-wise.

Can anyone comment on how these compare from a quality standpoint?

Sorry, can’t help with your comparison question.
But, look at these guys:
deepcutstudio.com
Got them to make up a custom 7’ x 4’ inferno planet mousemat style.
Loved it so much, got another 7’ x 4’ urban wasteland mousemat style surface.
I am presently contemplating their Frostgrave mat to give my Space Wolves something like home.
They also do cloth & pvc versions which are cheaper and more portable.
Great service, great mats, recommended.

The GW mat is not particularly good - I've seen them in person. It pales in comparison to the good companies.

The ones to look at would probably be:

Deep Cut Studios
Urbanmatz
Gamemat.eu

There are some companies who do vinyl mats at decent quality. The best are, of course, the mousepad/neoprene mats.

I got one of the mats from https://matsbymars.com/ they are vinyl, but they offer the pre-chapter approved matched play overlay as small dotted lines.

The mat has a little bit of an upward curl on the edges though. I do not plan on taking it off the table so a little strip of double sided tape has held it down just fine.

This. The mouse pad mats are the best. A good mouse pad mat wont curl or deform and the best of the best are even liquid resistant in case spills of drinks or children are a concern.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Go to gamemat dot eu; they have great Mousepad mats without corner logo like frontline gaming ones, make sure to get a tube or bag to store it in; great designs too, I got the fallout, snowstorm, imperial base and mars 6x4; I would suggest 6x4 over the 4x4 as it’s standard size.

This thread inspired me to buy this mat:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XGSGGXD/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ordered it on the 17th, came in today. Quality is excellent, the material reminds me somewhat of an advertisement banner, but it glossy smooth on the playing side. The ridges on the back side create a strong grip, so it won't be sliding around.

The only downside is it was rolled up with the backside facing out, so I'm having to lay it out with a couple weights in the corner to get it to flatten out (Terrain ruins or hills should flatten it nicely for play). For storing, I think I'll keep it with the playing surface facing outwards, so it will lay flatter when rolled out.

It never ends well
