I'm thinking of putting together a wierd list comprised of Harlequins in one detachment, and another with Cypher, an Inquisitor and some Officio Assassinorum guys. Thought it would be an interesting list and I was a bit inspired by some of the stories I read about the Harlequins and Cypher and Greyfax. Sort of an oddball team of players of the more mysterious variety. I know you need to have a shared keyword under your factions for units in the same detachment, but can I have another detachment in the same army that doesn't share any keywords?

"The Ultramarines are here to save us!"

"Those are the Sons of Orar."

"O R they!"

Not for matched play, because all detachments must share a top-level keyword. It sounds like an interesting idea for a narrative game though!

Thanks for the clarification, I believe I will make it for narrative play. I'l be posting it soon in army lists with a qualifier about it being just for narrative play. Cheers.

I think you're not a Battleforged army, but that's it - so you loose 3 CP and I think all the "Chapter Tactics" require your army to be Battleforged, too - but I'm not 100% sure on that. But I'm pretty sure it's legal.

Matched Play requires your army to be battleforged. So no, it's not legal in Matched Play.

OH - I missed that, thanks!

While both of the above statements are true, they aren’t actually connected in the way you imply:

Battleforged means “everyone in a detachment” and nothing else. So you can have an army with an Imperium detachment and a Harlequin detachment and still be battleforged, which means you get the bonus CP and can potentially get things like Chapter Tactics etc if your detachments are individually “pure” as each rule requires.

Matched play requires a battleforged army and also further restricts it so that all detachments must have a keyword in common between them. So the hypothetical harlequin/Imperium alliance would not be valid for Matched Play while a “Crusade” list of three or four different chapters of space marines in individual detachments would be.

I was going to say...battleforged just requires a common kw which is why all the imp soup lists work in matched (They all shair the Imp KW). This applies also to Tyranids allowing multiple hive fleets or Space Marines allowing multiple chapters though if you want to keep your chapter/fleet specific bonuses the need to be in different detachments.

EDIT: I need to read the whole post...lol So in matched no as prev mentioned, as they all don't shair a KW but you can do anything you want in narrative.
