Subject: New To Tyranids, Help me Decide What To Buy

Hello there,
Been playing since the start of 5th, been a one army guy for that entire time (Guard). Been thinking about picking up bugs for the longest time, and with the guard hate flying around these days (some of which I feel is justified) and just the general desire to try something else out, finally biting the bullet.
What I have so far
1 Tervigon box which I believe can also be a tyrannofex (i like magnets)
3 boxes of Termagants
Ive played gunline for so long, I'd love to really get up there and chew some face in melee, that would be a pretty fun change I am thinking.
Looking to spend a few hundred dollars, what should I get? Give me your opinions. What are you eating people with? What has eaten you?
Thanks!

Once the majority of the line comes back from being out of stock you might want to look into flying Hive Tyrants, Carnifex including Old One Eye, Genestealers and Hormagaunts.
If you don't have the Codex pick that up and take a look at hive fleet Kraken.

Genestealers are where it's at for close combat tyranid lists.
The big monsters are fun, but genestealers are the reliable way to murder everything.
Hormagaunts are kinda useful. The thing to remember is that they don't kill anything. Don't expect them to do any damage, no matter how many of them you take.
They exist to pile in 6" then consolidate another 6" to lock up a gunline and stop them from shooting you.
If you build those termagants with devourers, then think about getting a trygon. It's a decent way to deploy the gaunts in range to fire 180 shots (with the shoot twice stratagem), and also comes with a big smashy close combat monster lumped in.

I do like the fact that Tyranids went from 'what the Hell do I do withis eclectic mix of useless models' to 'nom nom nom nom.........'
OP, malanthropes were good last time I checked.not familiar with the new rules however.
|
Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

A Carnifex.
Just to troll another thread on this forum
Seriously though, Genestealers are fantastic. If you can convince yourself to paint a horde, Devourer Termagants are also fun in huge numbers. Their output number of shots is horrifying.

Malanthropes are synapse and make the enemy suffer -1 to hit nearby models, but they got a hefty price hike in CA. They do nothing useful offensively.

Malanthropes are mainly for if you're running a gunline. The -1 to hit + synapse makes them perfect for babysitting a few exocrines, hive guard, or biovores. You could run them up the table after a few packs of genestealers. They might have a bit of trouble keeping up though, unless you leave a trail of genestealers leading back to them. They are significantly more expensive after CA. But now you just have to put a bit more thought into building around them, rather than chucking them into any and every list.
