So for a local escalation league I decided to do primaris marines, specifically the Blades of vengeance, because they are a DA sucesor chapter, and I already have dark angels. I like the combination of deathwing and battle companies colors, and I think it's a color scheme that really works well with the mark X armor.

I went with the classic red weapons (though i've seen some art that uses black), but hit a snag, without robes I will need some way to note the sergeants, obviously by helmet color, but the question is what combination. I have a few ideas but was wondering which you guys think would look better. Do I go monochromatic ushabti bone, Do I switch the face plate to abaddon black (since red would require a change for the eye color), or do I do the whole helmet black? I'm also open to new color combinations that are in theme for a DA successor chapter.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

I'd go with all bone to help catch the eye; black lacks contrast and would make the leader fade into the background when next to the others.

As a bonus, from a storytelling approach the adoption of more Deathwing colors hints at the sergeant being closer to the inner circle than the rest of the squad.

As they're an all-Primaris Chapter, you don't even need to do that.

Fluffwise it seems that the DA aren't too accepting of the Primaris. The exception is the Librarians, who you can't really hide anything from.

Going for an all-bone helmet will be just fine for the Blades of Vengeance.

Yeah, the DA are much more reserved about the primaris marines than other chapters like the blood angels or ultramarines. They actually handled it pretty well rules wise, you can upgrade characters to deathwing (IE: inner circle) for a CP, which gives them a few extra rules. Which means by default they are not members of the inner circle, even if they hold the rank of master.

It's kind of funny because the BoV are mostly 30k marines that volunteered for the upgrade (at least if the pattern holds from other chapters first primaris successors), and thus would have known Luther and the lion. Becoming a member of the inner circle must involve quite a few shocking revelations for them.

Anyway, bone white it is for the helmets. Maybe I'll add a vanguard detachment of deathwing who are "observing" the BoV to determine if they are part of team Luther. It's that or maybe some Custodes since they were both part of the indomitus crusade.

If i'm not too late maybe try changing the pose of the sergeants to indicate what they are similar to the Dark Imperium ones.

Tyranids = 1500 Points
Chaos = 3341 Points
Dark Angels =

Why not give them bare heads or hooded heads and a tabard?Shouldn't be too hard to green stuff them up..
