Hey all, been slowly working on some Tyranids for a new army. Decided for the color scheme I wanted to use the art of the New Phyrexia cards from Magic the Gathering as a base, namely the white faction. So bloody skinless monsters with white porcelain carapaces, like this lady here.

For the fleshy areas I went with variations on either Blood for the Blood God or Tamiya Clear Red with some dark tints over a flesh wash, depending on how glossy I wanted it. Carapaces were Menoth White Highlight, with various gloss flesh washes. The armored shells were gone over with another Menoth layer and then gloss varnish.

I want my bugs to have increasing amounts of shiny porcelain carapace depending on importance in the hierarchy. So Mr. Lictor here gets some on top, to represent being a cool assassin cricket, but still mostly flesh and bone. It looks a little weird due to glossy carapaces reflecting everything around them into funhouse mirror patterns.

These guys and the eventual gaunts will get the barest, quickest of paintjobs to save on sanity. Primer, airbrushed Menoth White basecoat, wash, and goop some red on the fleshy bits. The mucolids in the back are all flesh, so a lot of red aside from claws and spines. Bases will be purple and black with assorted alien foliage being light purple or green.

Comments/criticism/croqueting welcome!

I like the idea. Nids and necrons are the once this palettefitsbon. Maiby chaos marines.

I would try to keep the porcelqin parts more white.

Damn, i really like this idea.

Love the idea and the realization on the first mini. The second pictures shows little contrast. But I really love the idea. Keep up the good work! For the Machine Ortodoxy

Add thin, dark lines and highligt them to make cracks just like on the picture. Consider glossing them or spraying them with a matte spray to add a bit of a shine to make the armour look more marble-y like on the pictures.

I do commissions:

Don't be afraid to use khorn blood as a topp colour on the red.

Damn, so cool.

Thanks for the comments! Yeah, I’m still getting the hang of making the porcelain effect look more porcelain-y. That Zoanthrope in the second picture is going to be a practice dummy for refining it. And once I have more little bugs with some paint on them I’ll add patches of brighter white to their carapaces too. It’s more about having something painted with those guys instead of playing the grey plastic hordes.
