Im new and dont know anything.
Is veteran squads useful as main infantry or is that only losing points in vain? It would be neat with the better BS and a Heavy Flamer but its roughly a 40p increase over my regular squads.

This is for casual play with friends only but I still dont wanna lose already at listbuilding :/

On moon miranda.

The issue with Vets is that they lack the utility of Stormtroopers and their better armor and Deep Strike, they arent as cheap as normal guardsmen, arent Troops unlike both alternatives, lack many of the options they used to have, and generally require an expensive transport to make the most of their weapons allowance.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Veteran squads are not worth the extra points. And a better BS is kind of wasted on a heavy flamer.

Pretty much what's been said above. There are cheaper, more useful ways to spend points on "Elite" slots.

Vets aren't troops, and don't fit the aggressive Special Weapon platform as well as Scions, and don't fit the board control role as well as regular Infantry.

Vets with transports are inefficient compared to buying a similar value of Scions that can deep strike. I'm not a fan of Guard's transports in 8th edition.

They're a neat idea, and not unfairly costed. They're not UNDERcosted like Infantry Squads and Scions, in my opinion. And even if they were, they're in a less-useful Elite slot, instead of Troops to fill Brigade FOC's.

Trust me, at 1500 pts you can easily run an AM Brigade, if you keep your FA choices and EL choices on the cheap. For example, Harker, a Commissar, and a Master of Ordnance cost about 125 points... maybe less. Three Sentinels runs you about 150 pts... you've still got 1200 points or more to fill out the rest of the Brigade.

Vets aren't a bad unit in the grand scheme of things, just overshadowed by other choices and their FOC slot.

+1 BS isn't worth two points.
It's certainly not worth losing 2 points and objective secured and filling a less useful slot in most FOC.

The only advantage of veterans is being a more efficient target for orders/stratagems, but the former is largely negated by them being paper thin and unlikely to last more than one turn of fire, so really all you can do is Tallarn' three plasmaguns into an outflanking position.

Then you wonder why you didn't just deepstrike some Scion Plasmaguns instead, given they only cost twenty points more, 3CP less, and get +1 Sv too...
Oh, and Hellguns.

Wait until Guardmen are raised to 5 points per model. Then Vets will be more competetive. Regards

I doubt it, they still suffer issues of not being troops and really needing a transport to work optimally (and the transport options available to them are not great).
