In other threads I often see people talking about writing lists at their game stores. I've never done this, nor has it ever occurred to me to do so. I don't leave my house without a list ready to go, and I usually have a few. Nobody in my shop seems to write them in store either. Are we the exception or the standard?

Recently, I've been carrying with me 4 lists:
Semi-competitive 100 PL
Fun 2k
Semi-competitive 2k
Tourney List 2k.

Am I just overzealous or are other people as prepared as me?

It took me from 30 mins to 1 hour to write a new list from 0, without it being a list that I have already have but changing some options or 1 or two units.

If I'm in the store 1 hour waiting for a game... I wouldn't be in a store. So I do them in my house.

Dakka does have White Knights and is also rather infamous for it's Black Knights. A new edition brings out the passionate and not all of them are good at expressing themselves in written form. There have been plenty of hysterical responses from both sides so far. So we descend into pointless bickering with neither side listening to each other. So posting here becomes more masturbation than conversation.

At work during my lunches, or at home, then head to the shop. I should make multiple just for different points levels, but I almost never do a pick up game.

I never play at a shop so there's that

Since 8th I tend to make up a list on battlescribe with whatever comes to my mind. Sometimes on the way to my buddies. Of course I have a concept for a list in mind when I pack up my minis.

Replace "shop" with "club", and I do it ahead of time. My entire Imperial Guard army is ten cases, plus three shelves of super-heavy vehicles and flyers - I need to work out my army list ahead of time.

The games are all arranged beforehand anyway, so we can both come up with appropriate army lists for the scenario and opposing force.

Usually when I have a game lined up, it's usually dependent on what I'm feeling like. I carry most of my army with me, and it doesn't take long to whip something up in battlescribe.

I'll bring a few lists with me assuming I don't have specific plans (like a league or tournament). I usually have a fluffy list that isn't super competitive, and then a hardcore list for best list vs best list games.

Though in all honesty I've enjoyed 1k battles more than 2k, so I bring a couple of 1k lists as well. 1k has a few advantages I like, force org is actually a choice (rather than battalion + whatever I can squeeze), and special characters are trade offs rather than auto-includes. 2k starts to feel like warmachine where you build armies around special characters, which tends to make competitive list samey.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

We hash respective lists together either while talking about next game or right before game. Generally goes stages:

a) decide fluff for the battle
b) decide on general STYLE we want to enact(often somewhat determined on stage a already)
c) think is there something specific we DEFINITELY want to include(sometimes this is so obvious it already affects a! If there's brand new big model you can usually bet it's involved
d) hash out list to side a. This just involves putting up units to fit the scenario
e) hash out list to side b as above except also considering does lists look like they have about even odds.
f) tweak side a if we came up with something that needs it.

Then play.

Any and all of the above, and some additional speculative options as well. It depends, who I'm playing, with what discussion beforehand. Sometimes I'll email my list to my opponent; other times it can be a (prearranged) SURPRISE!

Of course, smashing noobs into pulp is most fun, but I only do that in months with a "W" in them.

I write them in Notepad++ in advance, format them for cleanness and clarity, and offer a copy to my foe in advance. I want to win a fair fight, not by hiding stuff in a barely-legible armylist.

I make my lists ahead of time.
I make a list for each of the club's standard points values so whatever someone shows up with I can play them.
I also keep a standardized squad points list (all that I have on me) so I can pick and choose my units if I somehow failed to match someone's points list.
My list is standard for a given points value.
I have to watch it since some people have multiple lists more for advantage or "tailoring".

I build my list, print it out, and head to the store. I don’t think I have ever encountered a pickup game with an opponent with a list ready to play.

Generally at home, using open office, printed then to the game.

Helps avoid issues around terrible handwriting (can just about write some Japanese and read it.. English.. umm.. yeah)

Occasionally pencil & paper at the venue if the game size swaps or something crops up

I usually play on Saturdays. So, I write a take-all-comers list at home Saturday morning, then head to the shop.

For what it's worth, I've priced out the units that I tend to build using the codex. Then I created those units in Battlescribe, verified the points, and set them as favorites. It only takes me 15 minutes or so to fully assemble a list.

I try to bring a different list each time I play. It keeps it as interesting for me as it does for my opponent.

I have a spreadsheet catalogue (and mysql database) of all assembled and painted units with their 3 matched play (index, codex,CA) points costs which I chop & change for specific lists when pre-set. At the moment the main list is drop pod based space marines which i'm trying to make viable.

I usually take the 3-4 pages of the catalog with me so I can go "A touch of this, a splash of that, and two scoops of baneblade for flavor" so as to have a quickly pointed list for Index, Codex and CA armies as I make a point of not doing codex vs index. A delightfully large number of games I have in our area is against new players, so I try to craft a reasonable challenge on a fair playing field on the fly.

So, effectively, all of the above bar the last

I'm actually going one step up from pregenerated units - I'm compiling pre-generated detachments, so for a 100 Power Level, or a 2,000 point game I can simply pick a detachment or two and then if we're using points, perhaps pick a unit or two to make up the numbers.

For example, my Cadian platoon is a 62 Power Battalion detachment, while my armoured force is a 72 Power Battalion.

I generally come up with a list idea (a theme, a unit comp, etc) and flesh out the general loadout at home but I often times find myself tweaking the list at the shop due to either playing at different point levels, opponent request, or trying to match my army's relative power to that of my opponent so the game is more enjoyable for everyone.

"Hold my shoota, I'm goin in"
Armies (7th edition points)
7000+ Points Death Skullz
4000 Points
+ + 3000 Points "The Fiery Heart of the Emperor"
3500 Points "Void Kraken" Space Marines
3000 Points "Bard's Booze Cruise"

I have all units on individual note cards. So it is more like a puzzle than a list when I arrange them to an army. I also add options to the unit in question which are not necessarily needed but result in even unit costs which helps when you roughly estimate the total cost.
