I love 40k's lore and the general IP. However, I have zero interest in playing the tabletop game. That itch is scratched by a game that reputed for being competitive and isn't a GW property. That being said, I take fanboy tokenism seriously, for whatever reason. Like, I want to have a physical representation--to my self, at least--that I am a 40k fan other than audio books and being subscribed to certain YouTube channels.

I think that I want to express it through the hobby. Imperial Knights are freaking awesome and look like great modeling projects. I wish Apocalypse games were still a thing because if they were, I'd gladly shell out for half a dozen Imperial Knights and field them only in those absurd situations. However, I have no interest in subjecting an opponent to an army of such a skewed composition in normal pick-up gameplay. At my FLGS, while I see that people are playing 40k, I don't see any of the old 10000 points per side battles with 8 players that I used to see a couple years ago.

Is anyone in a similar boat?

Personally, no. But while i'll shout till i'm blue in the face about the diabolical *evil* of gw (bit of hyperbole there, but still), i don't think there's anything wrong with people doing what they enjoy.

You like the universe? You like the models? You might like painting too, which is a hobby in itself. You can't take it with you when you die, if you have an itch to buy then by all means scratch it. And who knows, you might find a decent opponent that doesn't care if you just wanna throw down the models you like and roll some dice.

yeah, after 8th dropped I just dropped 40k, but I love the lore (pre guilliman) and so I like playing the video games, but no interest at all in playing it anymore. I do like painting the models, some of them, still do with 30k. and I love reading the IA books, those campaigns are just awesome.

your mind

I am only painting and modeling and griping about the good old days lately, too.
8th seems OK but after house ruling terrain and cover and wound allocation, and same would go for flyers and tanks using sponsons and turrets and so on too. If all this were corrected, then it seems like it would be a decent game but I lost all enthusiasm to play - the rules just psuk.

Most people I know go in cycles, actually. Even years long.

Generic characters disappearing? Elite units of your army losing options and customizations? No longer finding that motivation to convert?

I'm in the boat. Im an avid modeller and okayish painter, but I've never played a game and don't actually have a coherent force of anything enought to field an army. (Although that is VERY likely to change once yhe new custodes get released. They are the reason I'm in the hobby at all really.)

Maybe one day I'll play, but who knows really
